hiya a funny noise has started developing from the left hand side of the engine block seems to be coming from inside some case of some sort, it sounds a bit like a belt slipping and my first thought was that it would be the alternator belt but I have looked through the manual and cant find anything about an alternator belt in there.
Happens in neutral and all gears at around 2.5/3k then dissapears bikes a 1984 suzuki gsx 400, cheers!

engine level is fine, I topped it up to the full mark and then drained a little out since I was told it was better to have a little under half full than over, how do I check the gearbox level, dj, its not quite a sqeualing but certainly sounds like some sort of belt slipping or rubbing against something also if it were to be the gearbox what sort of damage is riding it for about 12 miles (if that) going to have caused, only recently started. cheers!

is this on a motorbike?

if so... forget alternators and belts. the only belt you will have on a bike will be a timing belt for ducatis or belt drive on harleys/buells. neither is your problem by the sound of it.

now bear in mind your bike doesnt have a belt of any kind it must be something else. in which case you need to explain the noise better. is it mechanical? is it rattly? does it happen whilst bike is stationary? does it happen in neutral or in gear or both?

happens in gear and neutral only between 2.5 and 3k quite a high pitched noise I suppose you could get the noise my rubbing two metal plates together or something but it really does sound like a belt rubbing on metal, (i know it cant be) becomes higher pitched the quicker you up the revs and dies off again when you let go of the accelerator seems to be coming from the gearbox clutch casing bit on the left hand side generator thingmebob :P
