While my car is in for repairs I have had two courtesy cars. Both times they just asked me to sign a form then I was on my way. At no point did they mention insurance.

Now that I've looked at the form more closely it appears that i'm liable for the insurance. Which means a charge of £30 odd even for a week's insurance. I don't see why I should have to pay..

I'm going to check this when I pick up my 3rd courtesy car tomorrow, but isn't it standard for the dealership to cover you whilst your car (which is under warranty) is repaired?

It is not the garages responsibiltiy to insure you, i work for Ford and we do offer insurance for the vehicles at no cost but it does carry a £1000 excess.

Most people use they're own or pay for it.

The last time my car was in for a service at Sytner, I was advised of this insurance cost. When I mentioned I'd never had to pay this before it was suddenly dropped. Never managed to get VW to drop the charge though.

Just rang them and that does seem to be the deal. I'll just have to be extra careful I guess! :p

BMW/Mini charge £15 for insurance or ask you to produce insurance yourself, £500 Excess, so its pretty normal...

My Insurance policy (with Zurich) states that I am sovered for courtesy cars as long as it's not over 1.7 litre engine. Or something along those lines

No it doesnt - it states that you are covered for courtesy cars whilst your car is being repaired by your insurance companies approved repairers - ie, in the event of an accident claim only.
