Oil + Filter change at National

Pfffft. I paid £30 quid for all the parts to service my Focus t'other week. That's for air/pollen/fuel/oil filters and spark plugs. Then the oil was £15 quid from a motor factors.....Comma Premium Flow 5w30 I believe. On the bottle "Recommended for Zetec engines". Brilliant.

£45 quid and 1-2 hours of a Sunday morning, service done. Awesome.

Edge is fine I know plenty others that have used it in the Focus.

Plenty of people thought any old oil was fine in a Zetec until widespread issues became apparent which led to the re-iteration by Ford that the Zetec takes a certain type of oil. It is for this reason that chains like ATS normally EXCLUDE Zetec engined cars from their oil and filter deals.

Edge is NOT fine. Why would Castrol tell you its not fine if it was? If Edge worked well in a Zetec dont you think Castrol would LOVE Zetec owners to buy it, given its their most expensive oil? They are instead diverting people to a CHEAPER product, you dont do this without good reason.

You are supposed to use the Motorcraft stuff but many people use Edge, figures were taken from Halfords, Just been on the Castrol website and it recommend 5w30.

But NOT Edge 5w30.

Your figures are out, the Motorcraft Oil is infact over £20 from Ford

It's £15 becuase I bought some just 3 weeks ago. I then paid Rapid Fit £10 to fit it, and the filter was a fiver. £30 at a Ford dealer, with the CORRECT oil.

5w30 semi-synth or 10w40 (moderate climate) for the zetec's.

they dont like anything else.

lab 15mins
oil 4.25 x £4.50
oil filter £4.75
+vat
=£41.80

they must only charge pittance in labour as for us the parts on there own with vat is £28.

I genuinelly don't understand how National are doing this - I can only assume it's a loss leader. I bought 8 litres of Edge 0w30 for £70, and that was a discounted price from OpieOils. I appreciate its cheaper wholesale but not a third of the price.

They quote £35 for an oil change on my car - and my car takes 6.5 litres of oil! They also can't possibly know this when quoting becuase the only information they ask for is the engine size, not even the make and model.

Perhaps Simon can comment?

Guess I'll be going back then LOL.

I suspect they will have absolutely no idea. The quote website shows this - no request for make or model. Just engine size.

To suggest an oil based only on the knowledge of the size of the engine is reckless and stupid on their part.

You can enter you reg on part of the site and it carries it over to the oil section, so technically they should know your oil capacity. But if you only enter the engine size and fuel type, then no, they have no clue, and it seems iffy to me.

Do feel like a bit of an idiot for not checking further myself, I had seen that 1CE had used the stuff and a few people at FFOC and just assumed it would be OK.

Just spoke to head office who can apparantly sort it in the morning, I'm just hoping no damage has been done in this short space of time.

They quote £35 for seemingly anything, mine, an M5, an M3...

Dont get it either, you even get 10% off for buying online making it about 30 quid

Are they recommending Edge 5w30 for an M5???

Oh dear @ that in a 99 M5 which requires 10w60..

It brings up the same page regardless, as it only asks engine size

What did Head Office say about its suitability?

Not much I will bring it all to their attention tommorow because clearly they are topping up 100's of cars with the wrong bloody oil. Can't do anything atm will see what they say tommorow. Hopefully I can get a refund and just go to Ford and get the Motorcraft stuff. Silly me feel like a geniune muppet now. Any damage possibly been done ?

I got an oil change once at National - got home and my engine bay was smoking. Nice little oil fire I had to put out from the oil they had spilled all over the manifold.

Never again.
