Just got out the shower and was wondering where did all the stereotypes come from.

Emos I can kinda understand as IMO they aren't emotional strong enough to deal with their emotions so let it out on themselves. In the same way Chavs cant deal with their emotions so let it out on others.
But where does the term Chav come from?
In the same way where does the term goth come from as from my understanding Gothic was used to describe architectural styling first so how does that link to someone all dressed in black?

Just wondering if anyone had any sensible ideas where these terms originated and how.

I think you may have the definition of emo messed up, not all emos cut ya know :D. Its short for emotional hardcore as I recall it, basically just emotional people, who just so happen to act in the predefined "emo" way :D.
Have no clue about chavs,
I think goth was some sort of tribe, like the word "vandal" comes from a tribey type thing.
(Im not sure this information is accurate, so dont hold me to it :D)

Goth as far as I was aware was from Gothic (certainly the 80's term anyway). The reference was to 19th century Gothic novels and their culture (Dracula, The Lair of the White Worm, Gormenghast etc.), romantic horror of sorts. As it was post punk there were elements of that within it too.

Goth has been round for years, emo and chav is pretty new though, chav cought on from the sun and such like, no idea about emo

Are'nt emo's now the slightly cooler looking goths that want to be Russell brand ?

The defining features of the chav clothing is the Burberry pattern (notably a now-discontinued baseball cap)

^From wiki. Does that mean a Burberry pattern baseball cap would be an antique item for chavism?

Echoing what others have said (and indeed living around the area) but I think chav comes from the town of Chatham, upsettingly close to where I reside, and full of the buggers, dressed accordingly.

The word has certainly been used around these parts since I was a youngster and I'm nearly 31.

Goth is all about culture (and nothing do do with being terribly sad all the time), isn't emo supposed to be all about being all emotional? Any emos feel free to corrct me as i don't really know much about it.
