Oil + Filter change at National

It's just not the 5w30 though, Castrol state they do not recommend any Edge products for Ford Zetec engines. Why do they say this? It cannot simply be becuase it doesnt meet a particular standard becuase it doesnt appear to meet Vauxhall standards, Rover standards, Kia standards, etc etc but there is no special mention of them.

Infact, there is no warning against using it in a Ford Duratec engine - only the Zetec....

There simply MUST be more to it than this. I cannot see why they'd advise against using it in ONE particular engine type and one particular engine type only unless there was a damn good reason.

Do you think it's acceptable to use Edge 5w30 in a BMW M5 requiring 10w60, Simon? National's website suggests it..

No. Magnetic is part synthetic anyway isnt it?

The 5w30 is all Group 3 base oil. So it can be called Fully synthetic. To get 5w-X grades you need decent base oil.

I'll find out more on Monday. The OEM development team sit below me in the office, my gut feeling is that 913b gives the fuel economy that Ford claim, plus it has some interesting additives. Obviously I can't say what they are though. I'd be happy sticking a decent 10w40 in a Zetec engine, it wouldn't worry me.

No not at all, the 10w60 in BMW M engines is to fix a design flaw ;)

Zetec engines have been known to be pathetically oil-fussy (IMHO far too much so for a mainstream engine) for years though - the 5w30 only thing is well known. So much so that usually (Until this weird offer) places like National would exclude Zetec engines from their oil change deals.

Read the FAQ properly.

Q. I notice EDGE 5W-30 – can I use this for Ford engines?
A. No – this is specific oil for vehicles specifying the VW/Audi specifications and is not suitable for Ford engines which specify a 5W-30 semi synthetic (FRD 913B.)

For modern Fords, we recommend the use of GTX Magnatec 5W-30 only. The only exception is the Galaxy with the VW PD engine which should have Edge 5W-40 (VW 505.01 / FRD 917A specification.)

They do not warn against any particular engine, just ALL Ford engines. The only reason they are doing this is because it does not meet the spec, more than likely because of the points Simon mentioned.

Kwik Fit and plenty of other garages did not refuse to quote me or exclude me from Oil changes.

The only engines that seemed to be fussy were the early Zeta engines with problems with sticky valves etc. I don't think Ford managed to shift this rep.

Do you make some of this up for yourself?

Ah the sticky valve thing, I think this was the original reason why everyone said use the proper oil. AFAIK Ford changed the engine hardware so the issue went away.

Again an oil was used to fix an engine problem. Same with the VW PD engine, special oil developed to fix an engine problem

Every year I'd try and get the most competitive price for an oil change on my 2.0 Zetec engine. Every year I'd cite special offers out of the paper and suchlike. Every year I'd be told to read the small print, which exluded Zetec engines.

Every year I'd end up just going to Ford and buying the oil there. The various Mondeo forums were also full of people explaining how important it was to use the right oil. My owners manual, IIRC (I would check but its raining) also explained this. Even my Ford dealer once explained how important it apparently was.

Then suddenly whats this - oh - the Castrol website iself expressingly mentioning that a particular oil should not be used..

So no, I didn't make 'some' of it up.

Yep Simon exactly

The Zetec "fussy engine" thing just stuck.

Haven't a clue why Fox has had such problems getting prices for oil changes, maybe because he had a Mondeo and this is where the ZETA sticky valve originated from.

Problem is the people who do the website don't work where the oil is developed

Exactly the same engine as your Focus. Revised Blacktop Zetec engine. They'd do it without a problem just NOT at the various special offer prices.

Your Mondeo has the Zetec SE?

This isn't really going anywhere.

In my opinion 5w30 Edge is better than 913B in the Ford Zetec engine.
