HD3870 with single slot cooler

Looking through google some people discuss on another forum that the 3870 doesn't actually require a dual-slot cooler due to its thermal efficiency. Does anyone know if any companies plan on releasing a single-slot version?
 
They more than likely are/will be, but I'm not sure personally. The 3870's current thermal solution is actually quite puny under the big lump of plastic in comparison to the 2900XT or 8800 GTS. There's not heatpipes or anything, just a socket 370-alike lump of copper (albeit with more and smaller fins) and another strip of copper. (this is not from personal experience, rather some pictures I saw of the fan disassembled)
 
The thing being is that they run very cool to start with, surely a single slot solution would do the job fine? Just look the 8800GT's, mine reaches 88C under load (with revised larger fan).
 
I've heard of cards reaching 100 and them not screwing up. Probably not good for the card mind! ;)
I actually prefer the dual slot coolers as they are nicely designed to flush the heat right out of the case makng internal case temps reduced which is nice.
 
I'm sure the dual slot cooler's arent as efficient as people say, in regards to pushing hot air out of the case.

I'm after a single-slot to fit in my shuttle :)
 
Have a look for the Powercolor PCS version which is single slot with what looks like a zalman cooler on it. I've got the dual slot version and its v quiet:)

EDIT its on ocuk as extreme silent version or something like that

seconded, my old 6800gs used to ramp up to 120C then slow itself down

yeah that got retired...
it used to work fine up to that point though so i had a bit of fun.. unchecked the box in the nvidia panel that slows the card down when it reaches a temperature and watched the fireworks! but then that was the problem, i dont like acrid smoke in my bedroom.

isn't an overclocked 512 meg 3850, a viable solutuion ? [my 3850's are running 759/1000 in x-fire in a Shuttle atm]

also what Shuttle you running out of sheer curiosity

Having had a few dual-slot coolers I must say they do chuck out an immense amount of hot air from the exaust when the card is running under full load, pity you can't do that with a single slot design because there would be no space to plug in the graphics card :D

You may have to settle for a 3850 if u want single slot?

It may have a single slot backplate but i'm pretty sure that cooler will block the slot under the card.
 
err, no I was meaning the card could be on the LHS or RHS and thought you meant a dual slot would overhang the chassis on the LHS layout

my bad :o
 
no worries, but it got me thinking, could a Themalright heatsink fit info a shuttle if you had no PCI cards?

I mean that Thermalright heatsink can be attached in two different ways right? I'm thinking off having the bulk of the heatsink 'flipped' onto the back of the card?

Best to browse a well known sff forum to answer your specifics, but I am not aware of many users as overall height is a factor in the Shuttle chassis methinks, particularly as it is so close to the optical bay cage
