Well, ive got abit more free time in the evenings now with my girlfriend in uni and the night drawing in so im looking for something productive to do.

Ever since i was a kid ive always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Basically i want to know off any pro's her what's the best way to go about starting, and would i be able to teach myself with books / dvd's etc ?
 
Buy a guitar, put on an MP3 of your favourite music, and just start playing the guitar along to it (attempting a guitar solo rather than chords initially). It will be more fun than trying to follow guitar tabs and if you stick with it, you'll be surprised how good you can get.

Then learn a few basic chords, and try making up some of your own songs.

Use headphones if you have neighbours!!

What sort of budget do you have by the way? If you had a couple hundred you could set yourself up nicely with something like this:-

and this...

If you shopped around you could get them both for approx £200 I reckon. These would give you an excellent starter package. You could always get something cheaper to start with, such as one of the beginners packs with amp, strap etc.., but if you got the stuff above you'd have a guitar that's giggable, and an excellent learning tool for your PC.

Once you've got a bit better, you can look at getting an amp, going to jam nights etc.

There are lots of tuition vids on the internet and Youtube etc.., but most of all you need to ask youself what you want out of playing the guitar, and have fun doing it.

Good plan, some useful tutorials on there. No need to pay for tuition books nowadays when there's so much free stuff on the net.

cant agree more, don't put too much pressure on yourself to learn guitar methodically, just plug it in make some noises and have fun.
Learning how to hold the instrument is your first task, then getting it tuned up http://www.get-tuned.com/guitar_tuner.php < try that link it has a decent online tuner that repeats each string for you.

depending on your musical tastes buy a cheap effects pedal like a chorus or distortion, they can make your playing sound much better whether its 1 string or all .

Consider going to a good teacher for a few lessons, 5 or so lessons with a good teacher can show you some good technique and styles of learning straight away, doing things yourself is great but you can save a lot of time by getting your basic fretting, picking/strumming technique right from the start.

A good teacher should also be able to take on board the type of music, songs you want to play and show you which are the most useful to help you get the basic techniques down. As well as many other things of course!
