3850 vs x1950 pro price vs preformance

My mistake, i didn't think the 3850 was that crap, it's supposedly a renamed 2900pro, and the 3870 is the 2900 XT, but looking at those benchies, even the x1900 XT/X would be a lot faster than it.

You were right the first time mate. The 3850 is nearly twice as fast as a 1950 pro. The results Cyber posted could still be correct... if the 3850 was tested in a stock AMD based system and the 1950 in an oc'd core2 based system.

I'd say these results were more realistic tbh:

ETQW 1600X1200 4AA / 16AF

FEAR 1600X1200 4AA / 16AF

synixx, the powercolor 3850 that you're thinking of buying is actually the factory oc'd version (reviewed above). It's pre-clocked to 720 core / 1800 mem v's the standard clocks of 668 core / 1655 mem.

I managed to buy one last week before the etailor in question realized it was the oc'd version and whacked another £15 onto it. I wouldn't of bought it at its current price tbh, but to answer your original question (and as Loadsa has already said) - the 3850 is a lot quicker than a 1950 pro.

Just to deflect any potential fanboy comments here's my 06 GT score (ran through my hdtv at 1280x720 as I'm waiting on Viewsonic to rma my monitor) http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=3918696

I got this same powercolor 512mb before the price jumped so I'm assuming I have a factory ocd version as well :D

Mine doesn't arrive until Tuesday but going by the manufacturers code it's deffo the oc'd version.

Also, Powercolor don't have a standard clocked 3850 listed on their site. :)

Edit: I meant standard clocked 512MB version.

how to review sites get benchmarks on these games?

they make their own demo's or use fraps to run over the same area several times and take an average. (fraps can take a minute's benchmark at the press of a button).

tweakguides.com usually can tell you how to make a demo in each game.

You do indeed as its the same card I have :)

WIll be clocked at 720/1800 out of the box and has the zerotherm cooler to boot.

Interestingly I am unsure why powercolor have an extreme model of the card as I can't see any difference between the model I have (non extreme) and the extreme as reviewed on tpu apart from the lack of the onboard hdmi (you still get the dvi-hdmi dongle anyway)
