F1 2007/2008 Winter Testing and Rumours

True we have had a good season, it's been tarred by people whining, Ralf Schumacher and general politics (again).
I thought the media coverage was so heavily biased for a while here that I couldn't take it seriously. It'd be fine if it was balanced but with a pro-Hamilton twist but, alas there was no balance at it became an embarassment.

We had most of that this season though. This season was a great season. It wont be forgotten. There was competition on and off the track where teams were basically going to war with eachother. Hamilton and Alonso were also at eachothers throats. The intensity of this season hasnt been seen since the days of Prost/Senna/Mansell and also MS/Hill.

What we dont want is 2008 to turn into another generic season or a Ferrari white wash.

At each others throats off the track, no where near each other on the track. There was no close racing and fighting between alonso and Lewis ON the track where it should be. That is what I will remember about 2007. Zero actual racing between the front runners.

Hmm 2007..

I think i will take the second? race of the season and Hamilton pressuring Massa into those mistakes.

I liked the really tough race, ran in wet conditions. Alonso was trying to match Hamilton's pace (and even beat it), but spun off in the process.

It's sort of official - Alonso is heading back to Renault. He's confirmed as much on his personal website (which is offline as a result) with Autosport and the BBC carrying the same story.

Renault's official comment is due this afternoon.

Alonso, Piquet and Grosjean.

RF1 said:
The ING Renault F1 Team is pleased to announce a competitive driver duo for the 2008 Formula 1 season. Next year, double world champion Fernando Alonso will drive alongside Brazilian rookie Nelson Piquet Jr. They will be supported by Frenchman Romain Grosjean, reigning 2007 F3 Euroseries Champion and a product of Renault’s driver development scheme, in the role of test driver.

“Fernando and Nelsinho will form one of the most exciting driver line up of 2008,” commented Renault F1 Team Managing Director Flavio Briatore. “We are delighted to be welcoming Fernando back home to the team where he enjoyed his greatest success. His abilities as a driver and a team leader are well known, and we look forward to forging another strong partnership. What’s more, he knows the team well and how we operate; he will feel comfortable straight away in this environment. Nelsinho is one of the most promising young talents in motorsport. After his success in GP2, he has spent a year learning the ropes as our test driver and getting to know the team ; he is now ready to step up to the next level.”

ING Renault F1 Team President Bernard Rey commented: “The entire team has been working flat out over the past months to return to the front of the field, and a top-line driver line-up is essential to achieving our targets. Our recent technology investments, the return of Fernando Alonso to the team, and the promotion of Nelsinho Piquet, all signal our intent to return to winning ways next year. Renault is also delighted to welcome a talented, young Frenchman to the team as test driver.”

Fernando Alonso rejoins the Renault F1 Team after spending the 2007 season at McLaren-Mercedes. Alonso drove for the Renault F1 Team between 2003 and 2006, during which time he scored 15 Grand Prix victories and won two world championships, in 2005 and 2006. He will play a key role in the team’s efforts to return to the front of the field in 2008.

“I am delighted to be returning to Renault,” commented the 26 year-old Spaniard. “This is the team where I grew up as a driver in Formula 1. Now it is time for us to begin a new chapter together. I am very excited about working with this great team once more, and confident that together we can move back to the front of the field. Renault had a difficult year in 2007, but I know that the team has real strength in depth. I am confident they can produce a fast and competitive car and be back at the top in 2008.”

Nelson Piquet Jr will complete the team’s race driver line-up. The 22 year-old Brazilian spent 2007 as the Renault F1 Team’s test and reserve driver, after finishing runner-up in the 2006 GP2 series championship. He will make his F1 debut at the 2008 Australian Grand Prix.

“First of all, I want to thank Flavio and Renault for putting their confidence in me for 2008,” commented Nelsinho. “It is a fantastic opportunity to make my Formula 1 debut with one of the top teams on the grid, and alongside one of the very best drivers in the sport. This drive is something I have been working towards since the end of 2006, and I am proud that my performances as test driver have earned me this position. I am looking forward to teaming up with Fernando, and learning from him. As a rookie, there is no better way to start your career than to have a double world champion as your reference point.”

The team’s 2008 challenger, the Renault R28, will run for the first time at a three-day teams test in Valencia, Spain from 22 – 24 January. The car will be officially launched at Renault’s corporate communications headquarters in Paris, France on Thursday 31 January 2008.

A brief interview of Fernando Alonso is available for download from the team’s media website alongside with CV’s of Alonso, Piquet and Grosjean.

no supprise really, i doubt anyone else would have had him. I feel sorry for Heikki tbh he hasnt done a bad job considering id like to see him join McLaren though, i think him and LH would fit nice

w00t, hopefully Renault's car is up to scratch next year, want them to be challenging for wins. Get to work NicktheNorse! :p

Shame for Kovaleinen though, where will he go?
Also, huge sigh of relief that Fisichella will be gone.

OT, has anyone read James Allen's hugely biased, book-pushing Lewis Hamilton article on ITV? I was almost sick, he'll have a hard time washing the brown stains off his nose after that one.

Totally agree. I thought Heikki did well & hope to see him at McLaren.

The bbc news article suggests Heikki was dropped because he did too well and could challenge Alonso
that was my first thought.

I'd love to see Heikki succeed at McLaren. Did he race in GP2 with Hamilton?
He'd also be (relatively) cheap for McLaren, considering they must be a bit short this year, and I've no doubt he'd outpace DLR. Alex Wurz proved this year, an experienced test driver does not make a good racer.

If not Heikki, I'd like to see Gary Paffett get a chance, although with sponsors pressure from Mercedes and Santander it'd probably have to be a German or Spaniard.

McLaren have plenty. Dont worry about them not being able to pay wages to a top class driver. If Alonso had stayed, they would'nt have struggled to pay his wages.

I think Kovaleinan will end up at McLaren now.

I think it will be very interesting to see how Renault do, now that they have their talisman back. Its a shame Heiki couldnt have stayed at Renault, even for one year, as he wouldve learnt a lot from Alonso (just as Hamilton did in 2007).

I hope McLaren can be competitive, as I dont think Renault will be ready to beat Ferrari in 2008. The last thing we want is Ferrari getting 1-2s in every race. I still feel McLaren will have lost a few tenths of a second per lap, by letting Alonso go and it might cost them. What they have gained though, is a more harmonious working environment.

Indeed, at the start of the year Ron was quoted as saying that McLaren had the healthiest budget they'd ever had - Vodafone paid through the nose to get the title sponsorship.

Pat Symonds gave an interview at the end of last season, saying he was looking at putting all resources into one driver.
So my view of BBC reporting goes down a couple of notches.

I must have missed the bit where Heikki did too well last season, he probably wasn't considered to be the right man to take the team forward again, and he certainly doesn't have the same financial backing, it is unlikely Renault will be paying all of Alonso's salary.

Vote of No Confidence in Max Mosley President of FIA

http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/vote-of-no-confidence-in-max-mosley-president-of-fia.html Online petition

Target: Graham Stoker Chairman of RAC Motor Sports Association

Description/History:
This petition is addressed to Graham Stoker Chairman of RAC Motor Sports Association in his capacity as UK representative on the World Motor Sport Council and asks him to instigate a vote of no confidence in Max Mosley's Presidency of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), which following years of suspect decisions has now lost credibility for impartiality with motor racing fans.

Anyone spotted how long he has signed for? I haven't seen it yet so would assume only 1 season?
