8800GTS 512MB Ramblings Thread

Depends if you game at 1920 x 1600, if so the GTX if not GTS ;)

Nope 1680 x 1050 ;)

My head is telling me to stick with the GTX as it's supposedly still the best card on the market but there's a part of me that just wants to own the newest card on the block :p

Overall Performance

The new GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB is an interesting performance beast. On the one hand it has very high shader performance, faster than an 8800 Ultra, but it also has a narrower memory bus-width and less local video memory than a GTX. A little tidbit of info you may find interesting using 3DMark06’s pixel shader test, the BFGTech 8800 GTS OC 512MB scored 557 FPS in this test, and the GTX scored 489 FPS.

This creates the kind of performance scenario where in some situations the new GTS may be faster than a GeForce 8800 GTX (where memory bandwidth isn’t the limitation, but shader performance is), but in other situations the GeForce 8800 GTX will still be faster. We noted that most of the time, at higher resolutions with AA the GeForce 8800 GTX shone through with smoother and higher performance, which makes sense.

Display Matters

If you are gaming on a large 30” LCD at 2560x1600 the GeForce 8800 GTX is still going to be the preferred video card for gaming. Its larger framebuffer capacity and higher memory bandwidth will provide benefits at that resolution in your games. If, however, you are gaming on a 24” display or smaller, the choice now becomes a bit hazier.

At 1920x1200 we found the new BFGTech GeForce 8800 GTS OC 512MB to be very capable, providing high performance right on the heels of the GTX. If you already have a GTX or better you are well off as they are still the fastest cards around besides the Ultra. If you are looking for a new high-end video card this holiday season, the new GTS is certainly a worthy option, just don't expect high levels of AA at upper end resolutions with the 8800 GTS 512MB.

I'd agree with these two statements from kyle, the GTS has more shader power than the GTX but the GTX is still the card to have when gaming above 1920x1200. So whether it's an upgrade or downgrade depends on your monitor size :)

Damn - Ive just plopped (expecting sniggers) for a 8800GTS and I game at 1920x1200 - just wasnt willing to pay another £60 (25% price increase) to get the GTX over the GTS...

Ill just play non-native 1680x1050 where I have to :p

I think i'm going a bit strange, nevermind.

Decided to give myself a day off today to have a play with the GTS which should be arriving any time.

I'll give it a try on air and then introduce it to my friend Mr Maze for some serious clocking. :D

It's 1920x1200 BTW ;)

There's not much in it and it will be fine at 1920x1200.

Reading reviews... I have the same thought has you...

You have to be carefull with the hardocp.com review, because they use different quality settings for each card...(Which is still interesting)

Anyway it should be better than my 1950XT.

I find the way HardOCP review graphics cards a bit rubbish tbh. Its fine if you have card X and want to know what it will do with regard to IQ, but comparisons between cards makes it very difficult.

So what kind of deal is everyone wanting?

Price?

Card make?

Bundle?

I think people are looking for a card to replace the old GTS at about the same price.

Card make doesn't matter because they are all the same and a lot will sell on in Feb anyway.

Bundle is just a plus if its half decent which usually isn't the case.
