I'm back baby!
It is stupidly easy to sign up to allow your organs to be used once you have no use of them.

Simply go here and fill in your details. This puts you on the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Also contained in the link I have provided is a link to the facts.

It is a very quick process, please sign up if you have not done so already :)

Transplants are one of the most miraculous achievements of modern medicine. But they depend entirely on the generosity of donors and their families who are willing to make this life-saving or life-enhancing gift to others.

One donor can save the life of several people, restore the sight of two others and improve the quality of life of many more. The more people who pledge to donate their organs and tissue after their death, the more people stand to benefit. By choosing to join the NHS Organ Donor Register you could help to make sure life goes on for many others.

Joining the register records your agreement to the use of your organs and tissue for transplantation after your death.

When you register it is important that you tell those closest to you about your decision.

To decide whether or not you wish to become a donor after you have died is something very personal and it is important that everyone makes their own decision. This booklet contains answers to the most commonly asked questions about organ and tissue donation and aims to resolve any doubts you might have about leaving a legacy of life for others after you die.

I did this the other month after a relative died of ATTP.

A freinds family were really against organ/blood donation it because, in their words 'you don't get a say in who gets your organs', or to say what they really meant, 'I don't want them to go to a black or asian person'

I think it's a good call (this thread). I didn't know you could sign up online, it's just a quick few text boxes to fill in as well. Can't really think of many reasons not to sign up for organ donation.

Surely just filling in that online form isn't enough to become an organ donor? Anyone could fill that in and put your details. Do they send you a form you have to sign or something?

Nope that's it. They send you your organ donor card through the post.

You get a form in the post that you sign and send back to confirm.

I just signed up personally. :)

I'm signing up on my provisional driving license form :)

I think I did that, so I'm already a donor. Imo organ donation should be an opt out scheme. It's not like you need them after you're dead, so there's no reason not to unless it's against your religion.

No, you get a confirmation along with your donor card if you have requested one.

Obviously if you receive a confirmation and you didn't fill the form in then you start to ask questions :)

I called the Organ Donor helpline to make sure I could answer this question properly on 0845 60 60 400.

Nice one :) You can also do it on the new Passport forms.

I've carried a donor card for a while now. But I have never signed up via this website, so I shall do it now. Plus, I'm going in for an operation in 1 months time, so just in case the worst happens....

No-one is grooming my body for bits when i die thank you very much. (Barring family of course) I dont see why a stranger who is an alcoholic should get my liver or heavy smoker get my lungs if there is a 1% chance they will knacker them again.

(My liver would be pretty useless anyway i think)

For this reason I wish to be cremated

Excellent. As the site states carrying the Donor Card is only part of it :)

it is true that you cannot choose who to pass your body parts to once you have died, but your organs are no use to you. if you have no need of them what matter is it to you who they go to?

It is entirely your choice and I'm certainly not seeking to remove that, just trying to gain some understanding. A young child could easily be the recipient rather than an alcoholic.

Prepare to be unpopular. Many people need organs for reasons other than self-abuse!
