Hey everyone,

Just heard a couple of my friends talking about anime films and i have no idea whats good and whats not.

Can someone suggest some films that can get me started?

I loved all the pokemon type stuff if it helps :)

Cheers

Depending on your tastes most of the Studio Ghibli stuff is well worth watching, Ghost in the Shell (GITS) movie 1 and both TV series are very good sci-fi.

If you've got Sky Digital I believe there is a channel on there that now shows anime on a regular basis, we've also got a very long thread somewhere in here covering a lot of anime :)

Pokemon eh... :p

You'll probably be a fan of animes derived from shonen jump like Naruto, Bleach etc.

Personally I would recommend:

Death Note
Bleach
Princess Monoko
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Full Metal Alchemist
Hunter x Hunter
Ghost in the Shell
Spirited Away
Akira

The Animatrix may also be a good starting point at it's more 'western' :)

I havn't seen much anime but I liked Akira, Ghost in the Shell and now am now a big Naruto fan which is an anime series.

Gurren Lagann was the anime that got me back into anime. It's very, very good. ;)

Right now I'm watching Bleach and Death Note, really liking those two.

Macross Zero is also superb, got to have a decent 5.1 audio system though. The dog fight scenes are incredible.

Second recommendation for all of Studio Ghilbi, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, Steam Boy. Don't forget to sing along to the credits of My Neighbour Toroto! :-D

Always choose Jap audio, with English subs.

Oh another thing, i remember watching a cartoon and i cant rememeber the name of it.

Its quite recent and it involved a kid and like different elements? And they flew on a sort of sloth thing..

lol vague description but any ideas?

Any reason for Jap audio and english subs? My total on a dvd site is getting higher and higher now :p

Because animes with English dubs are the devils work :p

Might be Avatar - The last airbender you're taking about, never watched it myself.

Bleach is funny. I don't really watch anime, but I'm working my way through Bleach at the moment (you can watch it online), and it's some of the maddest stuff ever. The characters have a tendency to lose half their facial features when confused/angry, and they are quite taken to shouting at random points in time for no reason. Love it :p

Because some people insist on spoiling a perfectly good anime by listening to it in a foreign language they don't understand, where men sound like rapists or the guy from Takeshi's Castle, women sound like girls, boys sound like even younger girls or occasionally like old men and girls sound like whistling kettles or teletubbies. They then make things worse by having to squint at subtitles that make you miss most of the action while reading.

If you enjoy listening to incomprehensible babble while trying to speed read and watch the pretty pictures at the same time then subs are for you. This also means you can act all superior when talking to people who listen to anime in a decent understandable language like American (the language anime is made for, don't you know).

This post may contain sarcasm and may cause some offence. ;)
Remember every time you watch anime subbed god love, love, goodtime, ultra-dragon-of-the-immortal-crimson-blade-of-the-ancestor-spirits soul-flame ultimate-deathblow attacks a catgirl.

Doomed Megalopolis
Project A-ko
Tank Police(first series, not the crap second one)
Vampire hunter D
Bubblegum Crisis
Ultimate Teacher:D

...and for pure comedy violence and bloodshed, Fist of the Northstar.

Appleseed is quality too but i dont class it as anime as it's CGI.

Ichigo's dad greeting him with a roundhouse kick always makes me laugh :p

street fighter 2 the animated movie is a good one (is it a proper anime though?) its a million times better than that jean claude van damme cak film
