which working days will pay more over xmas?

Im a student going home for xmas to work at tesco. i just wondered which days I should put my name down so I will get paid more (as working bank hols doesnt bother me).

Am I right in saying xmas eve ISNT a bank hol?
its closed xmas day, but new years day is bank hol? so is boxing day?

Christmas Eve isn't a bank holiday.

If its anything like when I was at Tescos, everyone else will have the same Idea as you, so they may not want too many people in on the Bank Holidays.

But, it may be worth your while working on the run-up to Xmas day (as they will need you in for extra hours)

I managed to clock up 88 hours in the week before xmas (Including one 18hour day, home for 4hours sleep, then a 14 hour day) - Came home with a fortune (almost £370 for a weeks work in Tesco), as I was only contracted for 24 hours a week, so over 38 hours was time and a half, and over 60 hours was double time. And I have to say, it was fun to work too, because everyone going through the store was in such good form.

We get paid most for Xmas day and New Years Day

Boxing day pays less

I don't understand why people get paid more for working "special" days...

If person a who expect tripple time won't do it, person x, y and z will do it for normal time! Ah.... I'm such an evil ****.

That's why they get paid double - if they didn't get paid triple or double people wouldn't work them.

I'd have happily done it if I was scheduled in on Christmas Day, but because I'm not, I'm not going to put my name down if I don't have to work it

Shame really as I quite fancy the £28 an hour... not to mention you also get a day in lieu... so that's QUAD time for working Christmas Day :eek:

The market would adjust if your reasoning were the case.

I know I wouldn't have gone in on Christmas Eve to work at Waitrose back in the day were I not paid double time.

I guess it depends how skilled the job is. You can always find a tramp to do this or that, but for a job that requires training, knowledge and skill you probably couldn't.

tesco are ****s, they keep changing the rules. Used to be double time the about 6 years ago they changed it to time and a half (this is for new starters only) and then time and a quarter and I swear some of the new people only get time for a sunday. They cant get any of the newer staff to work sundays as they just say pay time and a half like most of the other people or take a running jump!

I get 5x for Xmas day and NYD ( 4x overtime plus alreasy been paid in salary )

better still I get 2x for not working it, as we run a 365 day a year rota we get paid an extra 7.5x O/T for every bank hol that we don't work due to the fact that the braota may have fallen on a BH

I love tesco. I've been looking for a job at uni, not found anything yet. Worked at Tesco before coming here, but haven't worked for them for 2 years now.

Monday they called me up and asked if I could work over xmas
