Ok have had another thread asking about this, (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17812153&highlight=username_lettuce) but now im sure its somehow related to my GFX card. Anyway have now uploaded a video file (well its just audio really) of the sound my mobo/or GFX card is making.

Im making the noise happen (which sounds like morse code) by constantly scrolling up and down a web page using the mouse wheel, but it makes this sound without me doing this aswell, but it would seem to be linked to whats happening on my monitor thats what makes me believe its my gfx card!! Having taken the side off my case and listening real close, the sound doesnt sound like its coming from the gfx however, and i cant really pin point it when i have my head stuck inside the case, but if i place it back onto the shelf of my desk the sound sounds like its coming from the keyboard/mouse, usb inputs on the rear of the case, or very close from that area and sounds a lot louder that when i have the PC on its side with the side off and me trying to .listen to the sound that way.

Anyway heres the audio file of the sound, you have to forgive the background sound that the recording picks up but i hope you can hear the morse code type sound over this. Any suggestions, its really bugging me

OMG somebody else has the exact same problem as I do! I thought I was going nuts.

My antec nsk1300 makes this noise and has done since new, its defo the psu as I have isolated the noise to that part. When my seagate sata drive is accessed or worked hard the sound gets louder. The worrying thing is my hard drive is starting to have problems with a few smart value's and im convinced its down to the psu.

Have you got another PSU to comfirm this?

Hmm, you sure its defo the PSU??, could have swore the sound was coming from around the keyboard/mouse/usb section of the mobo. But then i couldnt work out why when i scrolled the page it makes this sound!!! Your right on the fact that when the HD is being heavily accessed it makes the sound too. Shame i dont have another PSU to try out, i have a Corsair HX 520W Modular PSU however. What other components do you have in your system?? any the same as mine?? (check my sig)

I have a standard one I can try but havent done as yet. But im really sure its the psu because the noise is loudest in that area. I have sat there and carefully listened around psu whilst making the hard drive move a 2gb mpeg2 video file. The noise seems to be emitted from a large group of capacitors, coils and diodes. The way this antec case is designed means the non-standard psu sits directly over the cpu area of the motherboard so its difficult to know for sure unless I take the psu out and run it outside the case.

This machine we have is in our bedroom acting as a tv recorder, htpc and downloader. The specs are considored old these days:

3ghz HT p4 (socket 478)
2 x 512 kingstons value pc3200
Radeon 9600 pro all in wonder agp
Audigy 1
Seagate 160gb sata
Lg 16x dvd writer
Stock intel copper cooler
Crappy antec pci blower fan

Everything is stock, no mods done to the case.

I know what you mean about the ports because I was convinced that was where the noise came from, I would tap the back or wiggle the ethernet cable and the noise would magically go away but would later return. Now that doesnt work and the sound is there 24/7.

EDIT: Im having issues with the hard drive aswell and it was completely ok when in an older pc. I have to use "chkdsk /f" on the d partition to unlock mpeg files and other weird random things.

Do you have the Antec 900 gaming case then?? This is the case i have and the PSU is situated in the bottom of the case and not the top like most, and the sound defo sounds like its coming from the top of the case, where in most cases is where the PSU is so if this is where your PSU is then maybe its not ure PSU but something around thr USB sockets, which is where i think its coming from, if that makes sense

So your saying its the motherboard then??

No I mean the sound is coming from all the electronics in the psu, they are slap-bang up against the vents of the psu case.

The only realy way im going to know is by removing the psu completely and then trying a standard psu on it and if the noise still persists then its the motherboard.

I wonder if certain motherboards dont like antec psu's? I assume your using the psu that came with your case yes? My case is an antec nsk1300 which is exactly like the previous one they did called the Aria.

Until I get around to fishing out a psu and trying it I just cant be 100% sure. everything is so close together the noise could be coming from the motherboard but the closer you get to the psu the louder the noise is. I even used to think it was the cpu making the noise, people on these forums have had this problem but this was bad in the amd socket a days afaik...

EDIT: the psu is at the back, fitted directly over the top of the motherboard and cpu area, the psu has a cutout (non-standard not quite atx size) to allow heatsinks to fit with a little clearance. oh and the motherboard lays flat on the bottom of the case.

Nah the PSU i have is the, Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU, my case didnt come with a PSU. I really do hope it is the PSU, as i dont fancy taking everything out of the motherboard and sending it back, the psu would be a lot easier to send back. I noticed that the 4 pin PSU plug that plugs into the motherboard is located just behind the keyboard/mouse/USB sockets, where im 99% sure the sound is coming from, so it might be that if it is a PSU issue. When do you think you'll get around to trying your other PSU?

Well ive contacted overclocks and they#ve gave me a RMA number to send the mobo back for refund, but ill order another Abit IP35 Pro mobo so im not without one. Hopefully it is my motherboard cause the noise. Really not looking forward to refitting the cpu, heatsink, fan, gfx card, and various cables all over again

Ok recieved my replacement mobo from OC on the 23/12/07, have just fitted it today, and now there is no morse code sound what so ever. So it definitely was something to do with the motherboard, so pleased that i dont have to put up with that annoying sound anymore, shall be sending the faulty mobo back to OC tomorrow :)
