I said he struggled against a team mate (hamilton) who wasnt cherry picked or contractually oblidged to move over.
Do you think he struggled against Hamilton, Yes or No.
I think he struggled against the situation he believed he was in. He believed he was in a team that didnt want him to win or didnt want him to get the best result possible. He didnt really have a gripe with Hamilton (until the Hungary shenanigan), but more with Ron Denis who didnt appear to support Alonso, as he felt he should. This ate Alonso up inside and incensed him. It really got to him.
However, once he accepted that Ron Dennis and most of the team were not speaking to him, he got on with the job and outscored his younger team mate from there on in. By the last grand prix he had levelled with Hamilton and another few grand prix would almost certainly have seen him overtake Hamilton.
Another problem for Alonso was that he was new to the team, the car and the tyres, so it took a while for him to adapt. Once he got going though (like I stated above), he closed the gap on his team mate.
Forget the second coming or whatever the media said, he was basically shown the way all season long by a team mate that hadn't driven in f1 before.
Although I believe that right now, Alonso is a superior driver to Hamilton (mainly due to experience), over the longer term I expect Hamilton to take over from where Schumacher left off. Alonso wont be able to compete with Hamilton once Hamilton is driving at that level. I doubt that many people couldve come into the team, brand new and beaten Hamilton with ease like you suggest. Perhaps Schumacher, Senna, Mansell and Prost could've, but we will never know.
He also made more mistakes this year than all his other years put together.
He was rattled and he struggled.
Yep and I explained above why this was the case. He was new to the team, new to the car and tyres and had to learn a new way of working. Once he got going, he hauled Hamilton in.
Lewis should not have got near him.
Why not? Lewis isnt exactly a tortoise.
As soon as Alonso realised he had to fight for it, he fell apart.
Nope. As soon as he realised that he wasnt fitting into the team, he started his off-track shenanigans. Once, he understood his place within the team (ie. equal status with Hamilton), he got on with the job and caught up Hamilton's points total.
