On a side note... i'm happy i'll be receiving my GT tomorrow after placing an order dating back to the 6th of November!

Hi there

These have been on OcUK since yesterday. Golden Sample editions in 512MB and 1024MB flavours. :)

Interesting, it's not actually the extra ram that is causing this model to be extremely tempting, its the fact it has a custom heatpipe cooler that claims to be silent. Only reason i hadn't bought a GT till now was because of the heat + noise i heard they are prone to.

I can't see how a 256-bit data bus is going to effectively use the full 1GB though. 512MB of RAM on a 256-bit bus is all fair game, but when you get over that the bandwidth won't be sufficient to make effective use of anything over 512MB.

Still gotta be better than pulling data over the PCI-E bus from system mem...

"Techspot" (don't think they sell hardware so I can quote them) have a preview with asus saying that this cards gives a 10% increase in 3dmark 06  and runs 7 degrees cooler when using their glacier cooler than the reference cooler. Great if you wanna run benchies all day but what sort of performance increase do you get when using it for what is was designed to do, playing games?

Really would be nice to see if it helps recent games (Crysis, anyway).

Personally, I don't think it would help much, but I would like to be proved wrong :)

Yes, I'd like to see that too, but also can't help but doubt it.

Is there any software available, that shows the amount of video ram currently in use?

Who knows, maybe the reason Crysis runs so carp when you up some of the settings, is because it is exceeding the 512mb (of my card anyway).
Maybe it runs better on the 8800GTX, not simply because it is faster, that's a given, but because there's more memory on it too?

It's just a thought, probably a wrong one, but I was wondering if the amount video card memory could be a culript of poor performance when you try to up the settings?

I seem to remember Doom 3 had an ultra mode... and it suggested you having at least 512mb of video ram, and that's years ago now. With all the stuff on the screen in Crysis, all those hires textures etc, could it not be requiring more ram, and is using system memory, to the detriment of performance?

V1N.

EDIT: I just read this thread,
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17815761

so I guess not. I didn't believe it really was the case, but didn't know for sure, so thought it was worth asking. Still, IS there a program which shows videoram usage?

7 degrees? Surely gotta be better than that compared to the reference cooler!

I wouldn't be surprised if Asus's 10% increase in score came from a 10% clock increase. I used to think there products were good, but they release under-developed products and try all the marketing tricks in the book. (Motherboards that overclock chips without letting the user know for example).

Why is that the case? From just reading around it seems that more people have had problems with the BFG/EVGA cards than any other. The whole 'sticker clogging the fan' issue was such a comedy joke that I can't believe it happened, that was BFG I think?
