I assume this is perfectly fine thing to ask on this board, im possibly going to purchase a Watch from the USA. I'm wondering as ive not done this before what is the %tax+import duty i will be stung with at my end, ive heard from my google attempts to find out that its around 30% of the Value.

Does anyone know for sure or know a site that could inform em.

Thanks.

Oh forgot to mention, the item will be about $220 in value.

you will be charged 17.5% plus a handling fee ( usually £5-10 )

and also duty at about 6% which is sometimes charged and sometimes not ( the value for duty is the cost + postage )

if you use 30% as a worst case scenario ( and low 20s as best you won't be far wrong )

Why not just ask them to import it as a gift?

If it's for yourself then that's perfectly fine and you'll have to pay nothing :D

how many times does this myth get posted :)

all "gift" does is increase the threshold from £16 to £32 ( figures correct last I knew )

Values are £18 and £36 pounds, £290 inclusive of freight charges gives a flat duty rate of 3.5% as long as the goods would normally exceed this. Duty rate for a watch would be 54p as watches have a maximum chargeable amount if entered correctly.

Edit: Oh, and you wont have to pay the duty as duty less than £7 isnt collected by the EU.
