Hey guys,

Need a decent recommendation for a good honest mechanic (if one exists) around my area, for a headgasket change on a 2000 mondeo V6.... a few that i've asked actually refuse to work on the car, and others have either asked daft money (well over a grand!) or cant fit me in for like a month, so any reccomendations are helpful!

Cheers,

Tom.

Probably too far to go but hell i recommend it anyway.

My local independant actually a porsche specalist but does all other cars. Took my 200sx to him for a service and to query a noise, he had the car for 2 extra days trying to diagnose the noise at no extra charge. dedication if i ever saw.

Quick turn around all work i've thrown at him has done within a day no matter what is it

Resonable pricing too.

Hi, I got my mazda clutch done at a tiny old fashioned garage in Bury area. Mike and Tommy Johnson at Knowles Street Garage, Knowles St, Radcliffe. 0161 723 2069 Did a good job on my mx5. Quoted me a fair cash price and when they had some problems getting a bolt off (which took hours extra to take off) they did not up the price. They also delivered the car back to Eccles for me. They are a bit "socially challenged" but seem to be good, honest mechanics who are in to their really retro sports cars! They have some really old cars in the garage under taupaulins.

"it's one of the few engines I've never worked on and don't really fancy doing it either i'm afraid mate, it's supposed to be an absolute **** of a job!"

:( cheers for the heads up though on them.

oh dear! You probably need to find a local indy ford specialist. Someone out there will be doing 2-3 a week if most garages are saying this! Might be worth asking the next one that turns you down if they know someone who will do it.

been asking every single one that does if they know anyone!

I've just had a quote from the guys at Topgear in burnley (the Powerflow dealer) they do a lot of performance tuning and are sound guys, he said it'd be at most £700 from them hopefully less depending on the machine shop, or if i supplied a new set of heads and cams they could do it for £400! I'm fairly sure i could get some uprated heads and cams from the st200 for less than £300 so I'd best get looking :D

Tom.

Cool, glad you have found a solution. Let us know how it progresses. I am actually giving up using general garages now. I reckon I'm going to spend some more time hunting out local honda/mazda specialists because general mechanics either won't do the jobs or don't use the best technique for the job because they have not done it before, then they take longer so it costs you more. I found this to my cost with Honda CV joints this summer...

aye mattpc.

This garage havnt done a massive amount of work on my engine before but are generally very good. The owner and main mechanic has a self tuned 200sx running just over 500bhp, and even the apprentice has a V6 engined Astra that he did the engine swap on himself.

Problem now is trying to find some st200 heads and cams! they seem rare as rocking horse ****

Tom.

They did the Powerflow exhaust on my 206 3 years ago and it's still there even though my other half is driving it into hedges etc.

Don't think it's the same guys there now, but still a great outfit by all accounts.

Give park street motors a ring: 0161 736 6210

The garage is owned by the Dad of a girl I worked with, whenever I either can't be arsed doing the job myself or I don't have the time I use them. Only garage I'd let touch my car. Mike who owns the place knows his **** inside out, and the other mechanic is his son, who's well qualified and doesn't cut corners.

left them a message :) hopefully they'll come back with something.

I think my sisters bf uses topgear with his Civic Type R, I'll ask him later on but I'm sure he said he uses them.

st200 heads and cams are very rare find i got lucky and got offered a pair for £180 i think it was which was cheap so i had them. I have heard that the st200 cams aren't all a straight swap either the later one had different pulleys on which means you have to change all the timing gear to get them to work :)
