Where to live in Reading?

Hi all,

I'm starting a contract in Aldermaston in the new year, and am looking at shared accomodation, but want to know what areas to look at, and which to avoid.

Ideally I'd like to be based as close as possible to Aldermaston, but it's a bit out in the sticks, so I'm considering going further afield, but the majority of places seem to be north of the M4, and wondered how bad the traffic is around that area?

I'm working just inside the M25, and sharing just outside, and the traffic is a pain in the arse, so I'd like to avoid it possible.

So, where to live in Reading? Any help appreciated. :)

/EDIT Missed, could a passing Don move to GD please? :o

Cheers, is there likely to be much trouble crossing the M4 with those?

Calcot should be fine, most people are coming from outside into Reading. From Caversham it could be a pain as you have to go through Reading.

I work out to the north of Reading so don't know much more - sorry

I would also look at Thatcham/Newbury if your working in Aldermaston.

I grew up in Calcot, lived there up until 2003, and spent all my youth in the areas south of the A4, and traffic in the mornings on the A4 coming out of Reading is a total nightmare!

A friend just moved to Caversham, it's supposed to be the 'nice part' of Reading. It does sound nice actually but i've never been. I only generally go into Reading centre for shopping/cinema etc.
I would also look at Thatcham/Newbury if your working in Aldermaston.
Thatcham (also known as Scratcham) is grim. As is Basingstoke. Newbury's alright though ;)

I live in woodley, it's not bad but as said before anywhere apart from whitley, oxford road and cemetary junction seems fine.

@ Kingy
Have you thought about Basingstoke?

Briefly, but if I've got to live away from home during the week, then I'd like to keep the commuting distance, or rather time, to a minimum...

This is entirely for carbon footprint reasons you understand, and absolutley not because I'm lazy...

Until tomorrow

I'll Just Keep Movin On...

Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

:D Littlest Hobo was epic~!

Moo! :(

I'm amazed that nobody has said it yet...

In a house.

There was a reason. :)

Thanks for everyone's input, does anyone else have any experience of the commute and, and then back into Reading, crossing the M4 each time? Seem to be getting conflicting opinions on that part so far...

Aldermaston... AWE i guess? Not much else there. lol

I've had to commute there from Bracknell (other end of the A329[M]) for a while. Would not recommend it.
