Anyone got one of these?

I've been holding out for a Pioneer PDP-428XD or 4280XD, but I can't really justify the expense at the moment and I'm beginning to think that 42" might actually be a little too big for the room.

I can pick up the Panny for around £600 so it's a lot cheaper than the Pio, but what are they like at handling SD and motion?

I have the 42" version and its fantastic, great with SD & HD.

I would pay the extra and get the 42", I was going to get a 50" but I thought it would be way to big, so I got the 42", and at first it looked massive, a month later im used to it and wished id gone for the one up.

Cheers for that.

In terms of the size, we are only going to be sitting around 7' away from the screen and it will be on top of a piece of furniture that is 85cm high. I'm a bit worried that if the screen is too large it won't be a very confortable viewing position.

Cracking TV, value for money is incredible on the PX70 range of Panasonics. I can't recommend one enough.

The 37" has a true resolution of 720 whereas the 42" is 768.

Can't say I have compared one side by side but I would imagine the 37" could look slightly better due to no scaling at all with 720p content.

Personally have a 42" PX70 but then the room allows for it. Sit too close and you'll notice picture flaws.

7' viewing distance will be fine for a 42", for 2:35 films.
Having a TV 85cm+ from the ground will give you neck strain. Put it on a low TV stand.

Not an option unfortunately.

We currently have a 28" CRT and the angle is pretty much perfect when you sink into the sofa and put your feet on the coffee table. A 37" shouldn't make too much of impact.

I find the middle of the screen 100-110cm off of ground level to be where most of the TV's I install end up.

Another vote for the PX70 from me, cracking set. SD is excellent as you would expect from a panny plasma.

I have no idea why people buy 37"+ LCDs to be honest- they look very unorganic compared to CRTs and Plasmas IMO.

If you have some more cash (and a hifi nearby) consider a Th42-PH10. It's the panel equivalent which means you will need seperate speakers and modules for HDMI sockets. Pluses are though that you get an incredible picture, vast calibration options and the slimmest bezel possible. A 42" panel with HDMI and SCART modules should run you £1000.

Hmmm, interesting option. I'll have a look at that, cheers.

Well this morning I spent a hour in store comparing the TH37PX70, TH42PX70 and TH42PZ70 against the PDP-428XD and I've got to say that the Pioneer simply blew the Panasonics away at every stage.

I know the Pio is much more expensive, but imho I think that it looks like money well spent. Even the Missus, who usually can't tell the difference between a VHS and a DVD, said that if we were going to spend money on a new TV it should be the Pio as she didn't think she could bear to watch the Panny after a Trinitron CRT.

Looks like I've got to keep saving then. :(

I imagine the panny was on the default "dynamic" picture setting which yes, does look dreadful and is really only there to make the tv catch your eye when in a shop.

The Pioneer is a better TV though from what I have read but then costs a fair bit more so one would expect that.

We had a decent demo running though various settings and I just didn't like the way the Panny handled SD compared to the Pio.

I don't suppose anyone knows if there is a difference in picture quality between the PDP428XD and the PDP4280XD since they didn't have the 80XD in the shop. The salesman told us the picture wasn't as good, but all I can find reference to is the gallery, PIP and calibration options.

Edit: Just found that one has Colour Filter 2 and the other has Colour Filter 3, but I have no idea what difference this makes!

One PDP-428XD with Pedestal Stand is arriving on the 28th! £1700 including installation and settings callibrated for my inputs.

Very happy.

I'll post some pics and a mini review when it arrives, if anyone is interested.

Just had Sky HD installed, and running it through my Panny TH37-PX70, the Standard Def picture quality via HDMI is superb, let alone the HD stuff (which is obviously even better). The Pioneer is probably better, but the Panny is capable of excellent SD...

I agreed, just received TH37PX70 today after a disappointing experience with 32" CRT which I had it returned last week. After switching to 'Cinema' mode, all I have got to say is wow!

It has much better contrast ratio than Daewoo's 32" CRT AND other CRTs in my house! Thats coming from me who is very fussy with picture quality, especially on contrast and sharpness. The sharpness is actually better than Daewoo's 32" (screen size of maybe 30"-something) and thats on SD!

Have a look at review that will make up your mind: http://www.hdtvorg.co.uk/reviews/plasma/Panasonic_th37px70.htm

Well the PDP428XD was installed yesterday and I've got to say that it's stunning.

Watched Lawrence of Arabia and Blue Planet yesterday on DVD and the quality is amazing. I just can't get over the picture, particularly when looking at dark / black sceens like Blue Planet: The Deep, it's stunning.

I know this might have a lot to do with the settings (I'm using the ones form the AVForums thread) but it simply blows everything else I've seen out of the water.

The only problem I've having is connections, since I don't have an HD source yetand I want to connect the following:

Sky+
DVD
Wii
Archos AV500

I didn't realise that although there are 4 HDMI, 3 Scart, 1 Component and 1 S-Video sockects, these are shared across 5 inputs.

1) HDMI + Scart
2) HDMI + Scart
3) HDMI + Component + Scart
4) HDMI
5) S-Video

Since I don't have any HDMI connections and the S-Video is on the side, I'm essentially restricted to 3 inputs for 4 connections. I might change the Sky+ to S-video and live with the cable visable at the side or change my plans and upgrade to Sky HD sooner rather than later.

I don't want to upgrade the DVD player as I like my current one and I don't want to change it until either the HD disc war is won, or I can afford a decent multi format player.
