Hi, I am looking at selling my gaming pc as I dont really use it. Its a dedicated gaming machine, E6600, 4gb etc. I sold the 8800gts from it a month or so back with the intention of getting a 8800gt, then a 8800gts 512 or then a gtx looking at the prices at the moment!
Fps are my sort of games, hl2, far cry, bioshock etc etc.
My day to day machine is a server & on 24/7 so I always use that for general pc use.
I already have a wii for the fun games that I play with the gf.

So the question is can either a ps3 or xbox360 replace a pc for the kind of games I like playing?
Can you use a mouse & keyboard on consoles these days or are you still limited to the controller?

Any advise would be great :)

360 for sure mate :)

use the controller - you'll get used to it - took me about 3 weeks.

I now prefer controller vs mouse + keyboard. It feels more natural after a while + vibration adds a bit of realism.

Mark.

If FPS are your sort of games god knows why you would be thinking of getting rid of the PC.

Also no, not really a console doesn't offer the same FPS experience at all if you are thinking of playing online a lot, neither console touches PC online gaming due to the sheer amount of dedicated servers you find on PC games, then there's the mods, added bonus of graphics, more customization (usually) and of course keyboard & mouse.

Edit: Also some games are slowed down for the consoles compared to the PC versions, pretty sure TF2 is a tad slower and UT3 is definitely slower on the PS3 and will no doubt be the same on 360.

I'd personally avoid consoles for FPS games - apart from Rainbow 6 Vegas / COD4.

I moved from PC gaming over to a console for whilst I was at uni, cus I couldn't afford to upgrade constantly. The main thing I hate to do is play FPS games. It just doesn't feel right without a mouse and keyboard, never responsive enough - especially when you're online and with a mouse and keyboard you'd have lightening reactions.

IF your prepared to try and stick out the learning curve I guess you'd get used to it, but I flat out refuse to play FPS games on the 360 - especially HL2-Episode 2.... It's blasphemy playing it on a console.

One day I'll b able to afford both, consoles for arcade, action, sport, driving type games, and the PC for FPS and simulation games that require a bit more graphical power or realism.

There are the same decent shooters on both, probably PS3 has the edge at the moment due to having Unreal 3 available to buy just now, the ability to use keyboard/mouse on it as well might be a factor.

I would keep the PC mate if FPS are you thing though, but UT3 on the PS3 fully supports any USB keyboard and mouse, and i expect many more will follow.

stopped using PC for gaming just before xbox came out and now with PS3/360, i find nothing wrong with FPS on them. yes, there are good and bad FPS, but i'd take the joypad over keyboard/mouse every time.

Inadvertently you have just described UT3 for the PS3. :D

But I agree, if I played FPS seriously on PCs I don't think I would adapt well to the dumbed down console versions. Any console owner who says FPS games are better than on PC is kidding themselves. A controller (360 or ps3) is not ideal to play FPS unless you like running slowly and aiming slowly. Also headshots feel less satisfying on consoles as eaitehr the guy you get is a dunce for standing there for ages or the game has auto aim that helped you get the shots
(I played UT2004 last week on a PC and struggled for a while, having had consoles for last 2 years).

You ordered it? So far I only know of me msmalls74 and JUMPURS who are getting this delivered next week.

In a way yes :p but no doubt there's not a huge amount of servers and the keyboard/mouse must attract a relatively smaller userbase. :p

and it's slower apparently, which is a bit silly really especially if it still remains slower for people with keyboard/mouse.

From what I understand the speed is the same, but does change depending on your controller type (i.e. different speed for controller and kb/m players). (unless by slowness you mean the FPS which is indeed locked to a constant 30fps, whereas on PC it will be higher). But I have only read one or 2 reviews so can;t be sure.

I was more talking about the fact you can use Mods and kb/m and decent hosted servers, in terms of comparison with PC games. The number of people who will use them is irrelevant. this will grow, if this is implemented well. (Can you tell I am excited in anticipation of getting this game delivered next week!!)

By the way did you get a ps3 from USA in the end?

I find nothing wrong with them either, but they are still inferior.

it must be true, since you think it.

this console owner is kidding no one. i prefer FPS on 360/PS3

don't tar all console owners with the same brush. i don't have a problem with using a joypad.

wow, you think well of console owners. you may fall off your lofty perch one day, watch out.

Ahhh I was watching this earlier (I was bored and couldn't go on UT3 at the time so I watched videos :o) and they said it was slower;

I did not end up getting the PS3! But I will do come March-ish time, I bought an iPod Touch instead and the money leftover went towards my new tele. :D
I watch Blu-Ray/HD-DVD rips for now instead, but I am looking forward to the PS3.

It's common knowledge, FPS/RTS = PC ground.

I own a ps3 and a 360 and don't have a gaming PC. I am reasonably skilled on the joypad also, and have played every fps on the 360 and ps3 (give or take a couple). I still think a PC is better for FPS in many ways, and much more suited for higher speed games that rely on quick reactions and fast movement. As such, my comments reflect this I think.

The above are just my opinions, not statements of fact, as with everything on forums. Perhaps you should accept it as that.

The only comment I would retract is the "Any console owner who says FPS games are better than on PC is kidding themselves." as it is worded badly.

You are a bad man, as the BluRay I am watching now tells me at the beginning in no uncertain terms, and you should be fined $25,000 dollars or something :D

FPS feel just the same to me on console as they do on PC, better with the faster reactions are still quicker on the joypad as they are on a keyboard and mouse, I really don't see much difference between them.

Oh and get a Wii :D
