Well, I installed it on my laptop and it ground everything to a halt.

Fortunately, I've recently had the time to reformat the laptop and re-install so I did a new install of XP Pro with SP2 and then stuck SP3 on top before any drivers, etc.

I was shocked to find no IE7 and no WMP11 in the SP3 package. (v3244).

Its certainly running better since the clean install.

What are others experiences?

That makes no sense what so ever. Not least because you need an internet connection to download it atm.

You dont need an internet connection for either IE7 or WMP once they've been downloaded anyway, as long as the PC has WGA installed.

Why would it not make sense to include IE7 in SP3 since it is meant to be a culmination of 'all' updates since SP2?

Also, XPIZE refuses to work with SP3 forcing it to windows classic mode.:(

That'd be Vista. Not XP SP3.

Wrong.

I read that if you have IE6 prior to SP3 then you will be updated to the latest IE6. If you have IE7 then you will get the latest IE7 etc.

I for one think that this is the right move, allowing the user to decide when to upgrade to IE7, especially from a Business point of view. We have some applications that really don't like IE7 at work.

Indeed. At work (local University) If we moved all of our student PC's over to ie7 through a forced update included in Service Pack 3 it would cause problems no end. I'm not knocking IE7, but thousands of students would. To only update the existing installation via the service pack is the right move, or to offer the option of an update at the beginning of installation.

Microsoft is going through a crisis at the moment because they bundle IE with the operating systems. So who knows.

Personally I don't think it should be bundled with it, same with WMP.

The bare operating system only and IE7/WMP e.t.c is optional.

But why? Apple do it with OSX. And people are going to need an actual browser before they can download any kind of alternative.

IE7 has now become a critical update so it will probably become included eventually.
Shame that some software still needs IE6 though. For instance some schools would be stuffed without the option as Heinneman refuse to update their existing software to work with IE7 - that's not really Microsoft's problem, but it's good we have the option.

Exactly, it creates more work for schools in general, i.e. if you dont disable tabbing it lets the kids hide what site they're on from less computer literate teachers. We probally wouldnt have upgraded but our web filtering software is more stable with 7 for some reason

If you're forced to switch to IE7 I can see a lot of businesses sticking with SP2 (or earlier), at least in the short term.

F11 is great for hiding websites too. ;)

I'm so sick of tabbing being disabled at school that I've had to bring in firefox on a usb stick just so I'm not spending half my time waiting for ie to load just to open a new window!

well, its off my machine again now, not least as it appears to completely lock down things like uxtheme.dll etc, which means no nice visual styles or themes even with the unlocker :(

Xpize 4.7 refuses to work under the so called improvements.

I'm shifting to Vista soon on a HTPC so will wait.

If I'm understanding you correctly you're expecting something which patches OS DLL files to continue working without a hitch after a service patch? Right...

Will there be a SP3 for xp x64?
Not in the immediate future, no. Possibly mid-2008 by the looks of it.
