Who will/should the England football captain be?

Terry has not been at his best at both club and international level for well over a year now. The only other possible candidates I see currently are Gerrard and Ferdinand. And out of those two the best one would be Gerrard imho. Terry isn't the best centre half at Chelsea never mind England.

Defensive problems? Huh?
Didn't Robinson of all keepers nearly beat our all time clean sheet record?
We've only really had problems there when the first choice players have been missing
I don't think we've looked very good defensively against the best teams in the world for years. There's been countless errors and mistakes, some of which we've paid for and some of which we haven't, and it's only playing the lesser teams that have made us look competent at the back.

Exactly, how many clean sheets have we kept against the top sides in the last few years? The only one I can think of is against Portugal.

Our defence is not all it's hyped up to be.

I get the impression Cappello is going to set the cat among the pigeons with his selections (At last), and on that basis i wouldn't rule out seeing Gareth Barry as captain or vice-captain especially given his performances in the role for Villa. Certainly of the club captains available and currently playing semi regularly his form stands out, and his performances for England have been one of few high points of late!

In the long term i can see Rooney as England skipper, but that's about 5 years off yet.

Do people really think Rooney can be a future England captain?

Aside from the fact that strikers don't usually make the best captains, I just don't think he's England captain material anyway.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I've always felt a captain should be a midfielder as they are in the middle of the team. Regardless of who is England captain, as long as Terry is in the first team he will bark out orders to the defenders around him. He doesn't need an armband to do this. But further up the pitch I think it's better to have another type of leader to lead attacks and it's for this reason I think Gerrard could be a good captain. Rooney may be a candidate in a few years but not right now, as if there isn't enough pressure on him at 22yrs old to perform in every single game, captaincy at this stage may be too much for him. Not that he'll ever admit that, he's always begging Ferguson to make him captain and play him even when he's not 100%.

The captain of any team should be a motivator and lead by example on and off the pitch. In the current England eleven perhap's only two player's fit the bill, Gerrard and Terry.

Ferdinand relies all too much on the guy alongside him.

Vidic is a monster and suits Ferdinand's game. Thats why he's playing well. He needs Terry to do that job for England so he can play.

Ferdinand gives the ball away too much to be the better player IMO.

Dont all central defenders rely on the guy alongside him?

Dont understand what you mean there :S.

Ferdinand gives the ball away too much? When? Where?

Hes a monster of a centre back and hes world class!

To a certain extent, yes. He does more than most, else I wouldn't have mentioned it.

Ferdinand gives the ball away too much? When? Where?

When on the field. Around the edge of the area usually.

1. No he isn't.
2. No he isn't.

At the end of the day, if John Terry played for your team you would love to see him what he does and love to have him as your captain.

Me personally, I used to love the guy but the way he acts nowadays really gets to me. If I was a Chelsea fan though, I wouldn't have a complaint with him doing it.

He should stay captain. If for whatever reason he doesn't, it has to be Gerrard. England will be well and truly 'murked' if its given to Ferdinand..
