Is it just me or is anyone underwhelmed with Bioshock?

BioShock is certainly not worth the 96% it holds currently on Metacritic.

There are a lot of crazy claims being made about it, such as "revolutionary" gameplay. Ignore all that, because not only have you seen it all before in other games, BioShock is actually pretty dull.

Way overhyped.

On a positive note, afterwards I played HL2:Ep2 and Portal. Both are fantastic, if a tad short.

I think overall my biggest bug bear (apart from the widescreen issue which can be fixed) is the (as mentioned by a couple of people) and thats the mouse lag. This was the first thing that hit me. I wonder if they did this on purpose to emulate using a joypad on console :)

Another thing that bothered me...

I can't remember what skill level I was playing at (probably medium) but there was way too much ammo and health around - it rendered the U-Invent and vending machines pretty useles......think I only ever used them to top stuff up.

Oh, and the way the bad guys spawned was just plain lazy and unrealistic.

agree, cant believe the magazine scores it has recieved, certainly a good game but nowhere near "the revolution" that some mags claim, and personallu enjoyed portal far more

Crysis can be modded so you will have to wait and see how it plays.

I thought the graphics were excellent on bioshock and everything else was average

As i'm bed bound due to prolapsed disc in the back and have do everytrhing on the laptop I think i'll load SS2 back up and complete it again as hopefully the laptop can run it.

What I do when I am bed bound is pull my desk up to my bed, try that so you can use a decent machine for gaming :D.

Been able to put a few more hours into this, currently up to Arcadia. It is starting to grow on me now that I'm starting to acquire a few upgrades/weapons etc. I don't think the first couple of levels like Medical Pavillion do it any favours, never really enticed me in so I kinda left the game largely untouched for a month or so.

Thankfully the patch has resolved a few issues like the Vsync bug. I must say though, I'm finding it kinda hard to follow the storyline. I don't think it is helped by the fact that most of the story is told in the form of narration, whether it be from Doyle or diary playback. This means that often you can't focus on it because you are too busy exploring or in combat, so I miss out on potentially important developments. So right now I don't really have a clue what's going on story wise except that some scientist was experimenting with accelerating development, and there's a baddie called Ryan.

The game is certainly well stylised, and has a bit of atmosphere, together with some Deus Ex style RPG elements, but the combat feels a bit detatched. It's almost like you are playing a story/adventure game and sometimes a bit of fighting gets in the way, the opposite of what you expect from a FPS.

Bioshock is the biggest disappointment of the year, not the worst of the year just the most underwhelming.

amazing game, fantastic gameplay and a breathe of fresh air ... and thats why it was voted THE best game of the year

what are you all moaning at its one of the best games of the year, someone does something new and everyone is slating it, its an awesome game imo

It is quite odd that 90% of us think it is rubbish, how does a game that gets 90+% in reviews and is so hyped considered poor, are we just too geeky and have got unrealistic expectations or is there some kind of consiricy going on?

It felt like a pretty standard FPS other than the weird art deco world which was addmitedly quite nice but I would prefer scifi personally and you had 2 weapons, 1 being some kind of power, OMGZorrs it is leik dual gunz but they r diffrent. :o

Probably the same console playing nubs that overhype every medicore console game because they know no better. *cough* Halo *cough*

oh yeah, Crysis was hyped but it was good and had amazing graphics, you just can't see em yet unless you have 8800GTX SLI. :p

90% of us ? wherever you got that figure from is actually irrelevant anyway, this forum isn't a definitive representation of all gamers

sorry but anyone who thinks Crysis delivered isn't exactly being honest, the gameplay was fine for the first couple of levels but then it nose dived. Releasing a game that promises amazing gfx two years down the line is no use to anyone.

Bioshock didn't pretend to be anything revolutionary, it was a fps shooter with decent graphics and a good story set in an art deco surrounding, which at least moved away from the 'aliens' scenario's found in most of todays bland efforts.

Dues Ex and System Shock 2 have yet to be bettered but Bioshock for me was a welcome addition and thoroughly enjoyable .

Im glad I wasnt the only one that found it boring and repetitive as the other first person shooters, they really do have to create a game thats a little different to finding key/door/entrance/shoot same baddie for 5000th time/take potion of him and get back to door game.

Now you play COD4 and its different each level and adds twist and excitement all the way, even COD4 had some weak points I didnt like having to kill the same guy for the 6000th time they could have at least drawn a beard on one or two baddies etc, but still GOTY if not Crysis :)
