Ive been running on Xp for a while and was having a look at Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I was wondering whether people thought this was a worthwhile upgrade or should i wait it out longer?

Btw I am running on 4 gigs of ram atm ^^

For me it was worth it (went ultimate as I wanted some features from home and business which were only available if I had ultimate - typical really). The main boost for me is that my main program is 64bit so that it gave me a nice free (well except the os) boost of about 33% in that program. Did have a few minor niggles with certain programs but generally they seem to work ok in a virtual machine so far.

the features that come with ultimate are quite handy for me. Apart from that I do use the pc for gaming quite a bit

The main reason that I use Vista x64 is because I got 4 GB of RAM installed. I haven't noticed much problems with the 64-bit version. The only thing to keep in mind is that you need a 64-bit version of antivirus software and most system drivers, but that shouldn't be a problem.

So I would say, yes Vista X64 is definately worth it :)

Whatever happened to all these fabulous "Ultimate Extras". That turned out to be a bit of a dangling carrot didn't it.

does seem a waste. However it's still early. Who knows what they might release in the future. However I doubt it will be anything good.

I am struggliing a little more wjth 64bit compared the old 32bit vista. Both were Ultimate. SP1 RC1 has helped though especially with video streaming over the network.

I switched back to 32bit Vista Ultimate from 64bit for one reason only, its impossible at the present time to get Coreavc codec to run in Vista Media center for .mkv files in x64, it does however work perfectly in Vista 32 using a small registry hack.

You can however get FFDshow to play your .mkv files in x64 but it isn't anywhere near as efficient as coreavc so i chose to go back to 32.

Apart from that problem which probably wont affect many people I would say go 64bit its deffinately a touch faster and at least it uses all available physical memory.

I have ultimate and love it. However I got it for free from a company I did some work for and previously had Home Premium installed. I cant see the difference tbh as I dont need the added features Ultimate provides, I just installed because I had it.

I upgraded this weekend to Vista 64-bit Home Premium and having no problems so far with games or network performance but then again my hardware is quite recent and with 4 Gb memory installed. :)

Kinda wanting to give Vista x64 a whirl again, with SP1 near. But can't due to my damn Nebula DigiTV PCI card not working in Vista x64 and the company appears to have disolved - so have to stay on 32bit XP until I get a new card.

Just to sidetrack, I'm currently running 32-bit ultimate with 2Gb ram. I'm considering picking up another 2Gb as its so damn cheap at the moment, so should I switch to 64-bit to make use of it?
Would it require me to format my hard drive?

A 64bit version is certainly a good move...however there would be a lot in Ultimate I would never use, went for Vista Business 64bit, and very pleased with it. :)
