Hi,

Does anybody know if Windows XP Home Edition allows other computers to connect to it via RDC? I'm having trouble connecting to my home computer.

Danny.

Yeah I thought it should allow it... I know there's nothing wrong with my home network setup because i previously connected fine when my machine was running XP profressional edition.

mstsc, microsofts RDP software isn't included in Xp Home but it can be downloaded and will work ok.

But if you're gonna download software to use I'd suggest real VNC. It allows the remote user to see the screen while you have control, which is very handy when doing support work, as they can show you what they where doing when 'it' didn't work.

out of intrest, the only other difference (that i know of) between home and pro is that home won't join a domain where pro will.

really??

I thought i'd done just that.......

maybe it's a sign of me getting old then...

He's right.

Home will let you connect to other pro/server based computers using Remote Desktop Protocol.

But you cannot connect to a system with Home on in the same way.

You HAVE to use a 3rd party application.

Logmein is quite good, but you have to pay for it.

TightVNC is the one I use when not using RDP... it's free and works well.

Just remember you will have to forward the correct port to your computer's IP address within your router at home (if you are using one - and allow it with any firewall you may be running - but you would have had to have done both of those with RDP anyway).

Another difference is no Local Policies.

Remote Desktop can only go out to XP Pro, or Server Based systems.

LogMeIn is free.

VNC is a great option also.

I think of XP Home as a stripped down version when it comes to anything that a business / network would like to use. Most of the LAN networking features are non-existant (including security policies) in the home edition, as far as I know.
