£20k ish to spend.

BMW 330d Saloon looks a good match..

Sport / MSport / SE etc? No idea!

Would prefer a current model, unless there are any reasons to choose the older shape?

Any other quick/comfy equivalents?

Is the 320d under powered?

M3 available for that money in older shape iirc.

Although the 330d does seem to be adequete for most things in life.

You can get an E90 for this money but it is unlikely to be an M Sport model - it will be an SE. Obvious alternative is an E60 530d M Sport.

I can confirm that a remapped 330d engine is crazily fast, and that's the 204bhp model, god knows what the 231 must be like remapped.

Do not spend nearly £20k on an E46 3 Series that doesnt say M3 on the back, it's a recipe for a depreciation disaster.
indeed, that is a rip off.
you may just be able to scrape one at an acution for 20k

I've just purchased a 2004 E46 330D SE with 30k on the clock for £14k. Full leather interior, electric sunroof, sports seats, electric mirrors plus the full maintenance package till 2009. BMW Warranty for 1 year as well.

There was never a 231BHP 330d, there was however a 231BHP 330i.

Check BMW's website. The current 330d is 231BHP.

Depends on what you expect, I think. I like my 330d, does everything quite well, not a mind-blowing car obviously but yep, I would look into one if I were you. As stated, you'll need to up your ceiling a bit, but try and go for a run in a M-Sport. The run-flats and the suspension gives it a "crashier" ride than you might expect, but that's the obvious trade-off with a M-Sport.

Surely an older 330d be likely to have turbo failure? Not sure what point it would need changing.

The best thing about BMW diesels is they still give good mpg even after a thrashing!
