Hey All,

Talking to a friend this afternoon and the idea of Moving to USA and working out there came up - and to be honest its a very tempting idea.

The idea is very new and i was just wondering who amoung you have done it, what obstacles there are in obtaining a VISA - i know countries like Australia use a points scheme etc...

Any ideas?

Even if you're an e.g. doctor or nurse you'd find it very tough to move out there. Their immigration controls are really hard.

It's really tough to get into the US legally, especially if you have a very generic career. I know a girl in the US who has just passed her bar exams, which means she can only practise law in one state. She was engaged to a Canadian guy who worked in IT, and they ended up getting married early just so they could live together because he couldn't get a working visa to move to the US.

Even if you have the offer of a job out there, it is still really difficult to get a visa. My brother has just moved out there and was sponsored through the visa process by his new employer (One of the 10 biggest companies on the planet).

He works in a very specialised area with probably only 100 "experts" world wide yet he still had lots of trouble getting a visa. It took two attempts and about 9 months of effort. The second attempt involved several hours with a specialist immigration lawyer to prepare the application. Even after all this the visa he has is tied to his employer so he cannot change jobs out there without getting a new visa..

Hope this was helpful.

What about being a designer (for a design studio)? Or something related to physics, like a teacher/lecturer?

Our designer who is a specialist in the industry has just been deported after 5 years. The company had to advertise in the national press and send offers to the 2 universitys over there doing similar course and got zero interest, but they still wouldent let her stay

Off topic, but is it quite hard to get visas etc. for studying over there (uni)?

I don't think so....all universities love people who will pay international fees (I'm American studying here, and I get charged 3 times what UK citizens pay)

if you had a job to come over too then youd have a better chance, or possibly some kind of doctor, or if you have a load of money .... were too busy letting ****** mexicans in.
