'Make Me A Muslim' - More Channel 4 Dross

Not a heads up thread...!

I am getting rather fed up with channel 4. They keep bringing up 'controversial' topics and enjoy exploiting them whilst heavily supporting the alternate viewpoint of general concencus to try and seem clever. Rarrrgh! 'Make me a muslim' is the latest in one of these woeful programmes.

The concept - take some everyday British folk and see what they make of the Muslim lifestyle.

The reality - take some lazy idiots with (generally) absolutely no interest in the said lifestyle and watch them winge and whine about everything, acting like children who have lost their toys.

Its embarrising, if I was too try to be a Muslim for three weeks, I would keep to it. I would make such a huge moan out of the ordeal. Its also just typical of channel four to put in a token gay man as well, just to watch both parties at loggerheads. This is TV at its absolute worst.

What next from channel four?

'Does the gay gene actively exist?' - With a huge bias supporting it doesn't.

'Is Saddam Hussien actually dead?' - With a huge bias supporting he isn't.

'Is the world actually round?' - With lots of misquoting to support that it is infact, merely a triangle.

Oh Channel four ... :(
 
Ouch, yea that sounds awful I shall not be watching.

Seeing as someone has brought the show up, which I actually find interesting and educational, they mentioned yesterday (and I have since then found online) that the bible contains a section that says that pigs are filthy animals, implying they should not be eaten. I thought that was very insightful - I wonder what strict christians thought of that, considering muslims do not eat it for exactly the same reason.

I was wondering that. I see a lot of Muslims dislike commentary on their religion, or perhaps they dislike certain people commenting on their religion.

A big problem with that is that they take their religion largely as an assumption in a way we are learning to stop doing with Christianity

Why does the programme bother you so much then? Its not really a "Big Brother" style thing, and one of the "honourary" Muslims is a girl who has a Muslim boyfriend (it will be interesting to see how that pans out, especially with the in-laws), so it is far from "dross" in my opinion.

Because its clearly exploitation TV. They are taking people in difficult scenarios and putting them in an awkward situation. Then we get to sit back and lap up the drama that unfolds. Its fairly tasteless, particuarly so by putting people on the programme which are going to be difficult and cause conflict.
 
Well, it would be very boring if it only contained people who couln't care less now, wouldn't it? I think the fact that they chose extreme people makes for a fascinating doc.

So your concern is the emotional stress that the individuals in the documentary had to go through in order to fit into the Islamic lifestyle?

They were probably volunteers

I watched it and was amused by how it wasn't really doing Muslims and Islam any favors.

No pork - unclean (Pigs are, in fact, very clean animals)
No alcohol - why is this forbidden?
No magazines or newspapers with woman flesh on display - again, why?
Women cannot wear clothing showing any flesh because men cannot control themselves. :rolleyes: :(

Kudos to that Western looking Iman as he cam across as sensible, reasonable and understanding. This happens to be how most Muslims I have met in real life came across to me.

The two bits of the program that really shocked me were:

- They tried to cure "being gay" by placing him around men as hanging around his female friends was what makes him gay. :D

- The basic rules of Islam can never be changed. :( The branch that bends in the wind does not break yet the stiff branch will.

Any religion not flexible enough to change is doomed.
