I'm going to singapore on Jan 7 to study law at NUS until june. I've not been to southeast asia before so it'd be interesting to hear what some westerners who have visited think!

Perfect opportunity to have a quick go on a ladyboy where no one will find out

Think you've got Singapore mistaken for Thailand... in case you don't know, Singaporeans (especially the governing body) are extremely homophobic / transvestite-phobic. It's almost like a taboo... unless you're a Thai, on stage and mime singing to a lovely chinese song about "buns".

I was born and bred Singaporean till I came over here 6 years ago.

Definitely very different in terms of culture - you will notice that Singaporean have appalling grammar (read my posts) and you'll also notice that we spe-eak-an-nd-emp-fa-size-our-syl-la-bic - comes as a consequence to being bilingual and the daily use of mish-mashed english with dialects of various kind (AKA Singlish)

You'll also find that 99% of Singaporean are law abiding citizens with years of emphasis on Tolerance and Acceptance of other culture and race.

If you have a wider range of taste buds, Singapore's 24/7 food centres are everywhere! (one thing you'll never get over here in England, apart from crappy Kebabs)

Hope you enjoy your time in Singapore :)

P/S
It is illegal to buy chewing gums but there's no law for actually eating and chewing the gum in the streets - you will however face Fines / corrective work order if found littering.

PP/S
It is illegal to have oral sex without a follow up of full penetrative sex; I read that law a few years ago, basically to deter underage kids from even giving a blow, so unless you "want to be an outlaw", think twice ;)

You'll be living in Singapore when Chinese New Year comes, February, you'll so gonna enjoy the atmosphere... least many of my English friends did anyway, way better than what you can get in ChinaTown.

i have been to Singapore a few times, and quite liked it, quite an interesting place to visit, and lots to see, and the foot is good.

The humidity was the killer, and the heat was a bit much, but otherwise i liked it

:)

Went there for a holiday last year, loved it. Hot and humid, the food is amazing and the shopping is good. Go to the night safari for a fun (albeit touristy) look at tigers at night :D

Visit Sim Lim Square for your gadgets, and Leighton's Shop Pte Ltd (located next to Hilton hotel. 545 Orchard Rd, #02-03 Far East Shopping Centre, Singapore) for a quality suit.

I went around 2000 and stayed with my uncle in his flat,(bigger than my 5 bedroom house tho!!).

I went to the night safari aswell and found it really enjoyable. Food is excellent, especially in th Malls down in the food court. Also went to sentosa, which is a small island with a theme park on it.

If you wanted to get away tho from that tropical paradise, i took a 1/2 hour cataraman jouney to an indonesian island called Bintan, which is basically your stereotypical tproical island!! Sun, Surf, Golden beaches!! and a load of watersports!
