Hi guys. My 2002 320i is due in for an Oil Service soon.

I was looking at the BMW website and saw something called the "Four Plus" service, for BMWs older than four years old.

Was wondering if anyone know's anything about this, or is it a bit of a gimmick??

Cheers!

Mal

not a gimmick , just tell them your car is over 4 years old and you get the price reduced, I have used it without any problems

What is done differently to cars that aren't yet 4 years old?

Surely that's the exact opposite of what a dealer selling new cars would want to do?

cars of that age often start being serviced at independents, it's a way of trying to keep hold of some of that business

Ahh interesting tactic indeed!

Aslong as they remain competitive im sure most would rather take it to BMW rather than an Independant so, nice for the consumer.

I know when my mate worked at VW, they offered a much larger discount on older cars that were serviced/had work done there. Im sure it was on both parts and labour.
He works at Audi now im unsure whether they have a similar scheme.

my car is nearly 10 years old and out of curisity i asked the dealer about servicing on there older car program and a bog standard oil + filters was £300

Not all dealers participate in the 4 plus scheme, the last time I used it a few years ago I got a 45% discount off the labour which made the labour roughly around the same as my local Arnold Clark. Obviously parts more expensive (full price) but it certainly reduced the difference between them and allowed me to keep my dealer service stamps up to date.

Sadly that dealer is now gone, I am not sure if the 4 plus discounts have been changed since the big warranty change but it is worth asking your local dealer what their discount is.

BMW dealers vary hugley from one to another , my last service on the M3 was £82 ( own oil supplied )

Yep I was quoted a range of £160 to £300 for my last Inspection I at the local BMW main dealers, ended up taking the £160 down to £75 with my own oil supplied.

Shouldn't the rates be fairly standard or can they charge what they like, as sounds like they were really just trying it on with the £300, they should get a report to BMW!

I find BMW themselves to be very reasonable. I had planned to maintain my car by using BMW for servicing and a local Indy for repair work - I paid £140 + my own oil for an Inspection I in August, which was £20 more than the Indy wanted.

However I've just received a quote for a new auxillery drivebelt and tensioner from the main dealer - £130. The Indy is after £105. For the sake of £25, and a loan car, it's worth using BMW. I didn't even ask if that included 4Plus come to think of it.

yep, I bought enough oil for 2 services ( 12L ) at a cost of £140 , BMW dealers charge around £115 per service for the oil

The oil price they charge is a complete rip off. As said above the dealers can vary hugely in what they offer. Sometimes they surprise you in a good way like £25 for a set of wipers for my last E46, other times in a bad way like oil at £13 a litre (or more)...

The one that gets me is the "consumables" charge for a plastic seat cover and paper floor covers, I have seen this up to £10 in some places.

Well worth checking around to see wo is cheapest for each job.
