If the Earth was destroyed (as we know it), how long would it take for mankind to return to its current stature?

With us having 'knowledge' of the current - would that mean we would be able to 'bypass' going through medieval times and pre. etc

Or would destruction of our 'mad-made' environment, cause us to revert to caveman status, requiring a full evolution?

No idea. But I would hope it was before Eastenders came on, can't be missing that.

On a serious note. I don't think we would get back to its current structure, not as we know it anyway. Because if earth was destroyed (I assume by bombs or a comet or something) the environment woul dbe different. So anything left living would have to adapt to that. Not sure I am making sense now.

If the current population were moved through the planets history to before we became "civilised" I think it would take us a rather long time to reach our current status, but not as long as it did last time.
We already have the knowledge/memory of inventions that have revolutionised us: the wheel, farming, industry, commerce, law and so on so forth. While the ability to harness resources the way we do currently would be drastically reduced, we wouldnt go all the way back to sticks and stones.

Of course... a large percentage would die and there would be complete anarchy in the overpopulated areas of the world.

Not only would you miss eastenders but I'd miss top gear

Seriously though as above but the structure of scociety would also change as we would not have the resouces and economic stability we once had.

I think we would build up much faster and evolve faster. Since we know how evolution works and how to invent things, then i think we would adapt pretty quickly.

We wouldnt have any knowledge though because we would all be dead ?

We would have to start from scratch again... and hang on - if Earth was destroyed where would be inhabit ?

Oh and dont forget the Dinosaurs came first !

There are very people left on the earth with knowledge of the basic processes... think about how difficult it is to mine metallic ores, work them and create something useful out of them with only stone tools... think about ploughing a field without an implement shaped correctly, or with no tools at all. Think about how difficult it would be to even get to a stage where your field could be ploughed because the weeds and other plants are over grown to the stage that you can't plant anything... oh you want to use a scythe? Make one.

Exactly what I was thinking. Its not much use saying "Oh, I'll just build a new spade" when most people would have enough problem shaping the wood, let alone finding the metal ore, melting it down and somehow creating a mold (from what, metal?) then shaping the metal into the right shape. Basically, nearly all of us would die.

I don't think we would.
Necessity is the mother of invention and if we had a decent selection of intelligent people left, even without any infrastructure, we would find ways to survive and adapt even if none of us had knowledge of how to make a spade in the old world.

We would know that it was possible and that would give the impetus to try and create things that would replicate it.
If there were say only 10 people left then it would be more difficult, but even with a couple of thousand I reckon you could survive and within a few (certainly less than 10) generations be somewhere around the industrial revolution in terms of technology.

I would imagine we would get to this stage a big quicker than we have to date (albeit difference, avoiding mistakes we've made in the past.. i would hope) but not by that much.. as said above we may know certain things but people just don't have the skills we once had.

Although i suspect there would be anarchy and such like.
