I am Legend

I'm off to see it, but with some trepidation as I've been a great admirer of the novel for many years.

Early reports suggest the ending has been perverted into a heroic feelgood type, which is the very antithesis of the bleakly ironic realisation that occurs to Neville at the end of the book.

That's disappointing, although i had a gut feeling from the minute i'd finished the book that they would make up a different ending in the film.

When were the films 'based' on books ever carbon copies of their original stories?
They never are, so dont expect as much. These films would probably be recieved a lot better if people accepted that and didnt try to compare them all the time.

have you read the book? the whole premise of the title is the ending. Its like making lord of the rings but then letting the bad guys win at the end. Its totally different and makes there no point in it being an adaption.

I haven't, but then again the film probably wont be a let down(in my eyes atleast) for that same reason, ignorance is bliss

Now from the reviews over here I thought it might not be as good as I had hoped. Luckily the critics have got it wrong!! I saw this last night and I thought it was awesome!! Big Will does an awesome job, considering most of the film it's just him and his dog. The way it's shot and acted really engrosses you into the film and makes you sit on the edge a few times!! Great film although the CGI on the mutants was not as good as I had hoped and the ending was way to wtf !!

Can someone tell me what happened at the end in the book?

the book isn't way different to the film the film is awesome, i was crying at one point! go see it!

another cracking film, worth a second watch.

Just been to see it and it was very disappointing. I read the novel only a few years ago and while I don't feel that adaptations have to be absolutely faithful to the source this adaptation, this throws out everything that made the book great in classic Hollywood fashion. It turns Mathewson's classic novel into a big budget 28 Days later clone with a Christian message tacked on the ending. The film changes the novel so much that the title doesn't even make sense anymore.

The first half of the film isn't bad and the deserted NYC is well realised, but the more the creatures are revealed as poorly realised CG monsters the more the film goes down the drain. In the novel the creatures are two types of mutant vampires who are intelligent and who can talk and they keep setting Neville traps by studying his behavior. Here they are just human sized vermin leaping out of the dark for cheap shock effects. The novel takes classic vampire mythology and ends up turning it on its head. If you change the monsters you basically have torn the heart out of the story. The end of the film is a travesty. It's the type of ending where I turned around to the friend I'd gone to see the film with and went "Was that it?" I'm sure there will be several equally bad endings on the DVD, because this just looks like the type of film where they couldn't figure out who to end it.
