8800 - what one? GT/GTS/GTX

cheers for the reply.

My monitors max res is: 1680x1050
Not sure if that means i can run games higher?

I have WinXP Home with 3GB of PC400 Memory, ASUS SLI Deluxe, and AMD Dual-core 64 4200.

Ideally i'd like to run games as smoothly as possible at the highest res posisble. :)

If i was you i would use the 300 pound to get a q6600, new motherboard and 2 gig of 800mhz ddr 2 ram. You will see an improvement putting a new gpu in that machine but it won't be utilised to its potential on that machine. If you sell the parts you have should be able to do it and maybe have a little spare. Just out of interest what gpu do you have in the machine atm?

pfft ingame you don't notice the bark jaggies like you do in the screenies.
Yes I do. In fact when it comes to games that use that particular antialiasing technique I prefer to use none on at all, since it makes me feel like I've just woken up sleepy-eyed when I look at things and they're so blurry.

I don't know if it's a case of sheer developer laziness, or that they're getting too big for their boots and having to compromise on image quality to make things look prettier, but it's unacceptable to me.

The OC2 edition of the BFG 8800GTX I thought was the top end of that series and competes with the Ultra edition but with a difference of a couple of FPS? Was going for the BFG OC2 8800GTX and hoping to run Crysis at 1600x1200 at full load... is it possible?

The BFG 8800GTX OC2 clocks are 621/1450/2000, the Ultra is 612/1500/2160

Most reviews I've seen have the OC2 able to hit 640/1450/2080 with the shader linked to core speed but using Rivatuner to independently clock the shader I've seen 630/1650/2060 so there wouldn't be much between the two and the OC2 will have better shader performance

I wouldnt, Id get a E2180 and a Freezer 7 which will easily hit 3.3ghz and be considerably faster in the vast majority of games than a Q6600 at say 3ghz.
This would provide a cost effective solution until the next gen of Quads is out and Quad friendly software starts to appear.

Cheers for all the replies here.

I think if i were to upgrade i'd go for AMD processors, never been an Intel man. :)
But a full upgrade is out of the question for the moment, plus i just spent 70 notes on 2 GB of RAM.

My current graphics is 2 x XFX 6800GTs.

I'm going to hang low until after Xmas to see how pricing is, for the moment i'm thinking Zoltac GT AMP Edition.

Even though the Intel equivalents are provably faster in nearly (if not all) situations?

I have bought AMD since the day i started building PC's, but when it came to my last upgrade, the Intels were WAY ahead of the AMD choices, so i went Intel.

Buy the best, not a brand, its only silicon afterall.

Why did you spend £70 on 2gb of ram when you could have got decent 800mhz DDR2 memory for £30?!

So how does the new 512MB 8800 GTS compare with the Zoltac 8800GT AMP and the GTX models?

I read it's faster than some ultras but doesn't have the memory capacity. :-)

The GTS is not faster than a Ultra. It pars with the GTX in some tests and loses in others.

The GTX however is more expensive (even the ocuk one has gone up in price).

The GTS is roughly 10% faster than a GT but it all depends whether you think the performance benefit is worth the price difference.

I was looking to that Xbit lab test the other day and the GTS was faster than the GTX in some tests.
