Toshiba Nuclear Reactor

Seems like a good solution to me. Unfortunately it will be killed by politics and scaremongering by people who don't understand the technology and it's risks. The idea that terrorists might use it being an example :(

I'm having a hard time believing that's real, if only for the really shoddy logo in the picture.

Would be cool if it is though.

The Japanese will probably lap it up though:)

Yep, it may take off in asia but when it reaches Europe... who knows :/

That looks awesome, assuming we can get past the obvious worries. Imagine the difference it could make to remote farming communities in Scotland/the islands and so on.... depending on price, of course.

Sounds very interesting.

However although I think big reactors are safe. I still have some concerns about small reactors dotted around every where. Will have to wait until we can see some designs.

although by the very limited info they give, it sounds reasonably safe.

The whole whole process is self sustaining and can last for up to 40 years, producing electricity for only 5 cents per kilowatt hour
Sounds very economical. However tahts still a huge price to initially pay. Wonder if Toshiba will "rent" them out to poorer villages.

That looks like exactly the kind of thing that would be a real alternative to fossil fuels, providing it can be disposed of properly after 40 years..

Small reactors are not new, see nuclear subs. Russians even built a prototype nuclear powered aircraft.

In fact, there is a lot of knowledge that is still highly secret about making nuclear reactions with very low amounts of fissile material. It is still secret because it is ideal for making bombs with.

Looking at the host site there are quite a few new discoveries and great inventions/prototypes.

Look at the new solar panels or the discovery of a huge oil field for example.

(I hope this site is not a wind up as some of the things on there are pretty damn cool).
