A quick PS3 question regarding using Sd Cards/USB Drives etc...

I must say I'm loving the new DiVX/XViD support. It seems to play and work better than my HDD Media Player (looks like I will be putting that on the bay ;)).

I can't remember though the file system for getting things recognised easily on mem cards /USB drives etc. I have searched but can't find anything.

I thought that if I put images in PS3/PICTURES/, Movies in PS3/MOVIES/ and Music in PS3/MUSIC/ on the card/stick then it would recognise but it doesn't... anyone know, firstly what I'm talking about and secondly what to do?
 
You need to have a directory labelled VIDEO (note all upper case) in the root directory of the USB/Memory card, and stick everything you want in there. I used to think it was supposed to be in a PS3/VIDEO much lke the save games and updates are but it doesnt.
Same goes for music and pictures the folders for the Root of the drive should be
PHOTO
VIDEO
MUSIC

Again all in upper case, hope that sorts it out for you.:)
 
Excellent cheers - I knew it was something simple like that but couldn't remember what, and this time google was not my friend :(

I may have to get myself a new extenral hdd. Anyone know of one which works with the PS3 as the ones I have tried previously have not worked!

Any FAT32 formatted external drive should work with the PS3, I personally use a 120gb WD Passport drive, works a treat :)

Yeah, I was thinking more about the caddy more than the actual drive. i have a spare 20GBdrive which I originally took from my imported Japanese console. I probably need to find a caddy which draws it's power from the USB cable rather than needed an additional connection.

I think I have one of those that work sent me for a job a while back, I'll dig it out and test it on the PS3 and let you know.

So far I have tried a proper encased 3.5 inch drive, a proper encased 2.5 inch usb bus powered Lacie Drive and a cheapo 2.5 inch caddy with my own HDD in it.

As long as it is FAT32 you will be OK. If the device shows up in windows as a USB mass storage device then it will work on the ps3.

(But technically my answer is NO I haven;t tried that one, but can see no technical reason it would not work).

Got myself a 250GB Freecom 2.5" External HDD which is pre formatted to FAT32. I will test it out later, when I get home.

Just out of interest, do I need to put files into the root directory of MUSIC, VIDEO etc or can i have folders within them?
 
Just thinking about it, is there a USB2 connection at the back of the PS3? (I think not but can't remember)

That would be so much nicer looking if you can connect a USB2 drive at the back.

Seems to be hit and miss with the subfolders under my VIDEO folder. Some appear and some don't. I just store my stuff on the PS3's internal drive now and do a System Backup to the external USB2 drive.

Nope. All four (or two) are at the front which is logical enough if you have the PS3 in a TV cabinet or something.

I bought one of those things that you can stand the PS3 on its side, and has the blue neon lights around it.

It gets its power from a USB port, and works as a kind of mini hub, giving two USB ports in the rear.

This is the stand I'm talking about



and these are the USB ports at the rear




They're quite a nice little stand, looks nice with the blue light, but not so bright as to be intrusive if you're watching a bluray in the dark.
I paid £12 for mine.
