Need a telephoto

Hi guys.

As title suggests i need a telephoto lens. i was planning on buying a 70-300 IS USM however my budget at the moment can only stretch £250 so there goes that idea.

what i have seen is:
75-300 MkIII USM
sigma 70-300 APO

I havent heard much about the canon but the sigma is meant to be soft at the telephoto end and hunts in low light and slow focusing. However if in the right conditions can be a sharp lens.

Does anyone have any opinion on the Canon 75-300 or should i just try and get a copy of the sigma and hope its a good one!
 
Have you considered the 70-200mm f/4L?

They can be found for £250 2nd hand if you're lucky.

I know it's not 300 but the quality of the lense will allow you to crop the image while still retaining great levels of detail. They also take the 1.4tc quite nicely which would be a worthwhile addition when you can afford it.

a quick glance suggest thte cheapest im gonna get this is 340 - which is the same as the 70-300mm incidently :(

gt, did you ever get yourself a 70-200 F/4L? I love mine, but I really fancy something like the 17-40 F/4L so am considering selling mine... I don't think my head is straight, with thoughts like these ;)
 
I have a sigma 70-300 APO.. great lens once stopped down abit. Does need to be quite a sunny day to get anything decent with it though.. it is a lightsucker.
 
Get a s/h 70-200 from the states. Mine cost £200, but it did get stopped for fees, adding an extra £55. You never know- if you buy one it might make it through customs unchecked.
 
I have a 70-200 F4 and I think you will be lucky to find one in budget.

personally I think that I would wait until my budget stretches to the 70-300 IS. I've had a couple of the cheaper range of 70-300's over the years and have been less than happy with either of them. Early 70-300 canon was almost impossible to use MF and took an age to AF. and I think I had a sigma, but its unmemorable.

As I said earlier, I have now had a 70-200 F4 for a few years, it does not get much use but it's so good i'd never sell it (unless 3 find the cash for an IS version).

my advice after wating money is buy the best you can afford and buy once.
 
id love a 70-300, but i think id find more use for a decent wide lense. trouble is, i know nothign about lenses other than the fact that my 400d kit lense is too soft:p

I did but decided i needed slightly more speed. The upgrade to the sigma 70-200 only rushed me £30.

The canon was very capable and obviously far more compact and hand holdable.

I know what you mean about the 17-40... i'm missing a wide lense as i only have what you can see in my sig plus my GF's 18-55 kit lens that i occasionally use. :(

My budget is so constrained because i fly the day before i get paid and want it for my trip. I'm hoping santa gives me loads of money but i doubt thats going to happen i have almost resided to the fact the sigma is going to be my only hope.

Not worth worrying about TBH. :)

To the OP... if you decide you definately do want a telephoto zoom i'd still recommend looking at a 2nd hand 70-200 f/4. It's within your budget and is an excellent lens.

There is no doubting the qulaity of the F4 lens, but many people really rate the 70-300 IS as an alternative, especially on a APS-C camera. I'd take a look at both before deciding.
