** The Official ATI 3870/3850 512/256mb Review/Overclocking Thread **

I have a problem with my 3870 in that any overclock even 5MHz will crash to a vpu recover in game? Yet at stock clocks it's perfectly stable. Weird. Never had this kind of problem before. :(

Make sure your fan is set to 50 percent or more constant. The fan profiles on the card are not good. I got the same problem with mine setting the fan to a fixed 50 percent in rivatuner sorted this problem out. I think maybe the fan was not spinning fast enough to cool the card well enough in games.

Worked fine for me for around a month. Not sure on profiles though i just set my core to what i want click on the run at startup and the same with the fan 50 percent and tick the run on start up box.

Make sure your running at x16 pci-e. In the bios to force it to be on, you can make it 99Mhz /101/109/110/119 etc rather than the standard 100Mhz which can cause issues.

Other than that, is your PSU good enough?

A question to crossfire people. I am happy with my 3850/256 but i feel i am lacking VRAM playing at 1680x1050. Will it get better if i get another one?

No you'll still only have 256mb memory so were Vram slows you down you'll still get the problem, best bet would be sell it and get a 3850 512 or 3870, but you could wait untill the next offerigns from ATi/Nvidia.

I believe my bios auto's at 16x unless you specify less, the mobo incredibly doesn't offer pci-e speed so it's at 'default' 100MHz and the PSU is plenty enough being a 550w Xclio.

That's an amazing core speed! Could you run some more benchmarks at those speeds to give an idea what it's doing for games?

gets 33fps in dx10 and results below in dx9

^still behind the 8800GT :p I think I'm going to pick one of those up next...

it is nice holding the top single ati card 3dmark06 score on ocuk though...epeen status

I think you need to try it rather than 'believe' its all ok :)

Gurusan... WOW... that is an AMAZING clock acheivement. I wonder if that's safe to do on air? Did you get the info from XS? I would ask if you could take pics of what you have done though etc (As I am fed up of waiting for my 3870, and may just order the 3850 512Mb if it can clock to 1Ghz! (I wonder what the performance difference is compared to a GDDR4 3870?)

REMOVED till tonight as for some reason it was a repeat of the above benchmark. I think the average was actually about 20fps in the cpu benchmark though, will repeat tonight :)

I don't know how Gurusan and you other guys get the fancy benchmarking screen though, I just clicked the batch file in the directory. How do I get that other bit up please?
