Anyone use 8GB (4x 2GB)?

Nobody needs more than 640k anyway. :p

Seriously who needs 8GB of RAM? Even most decent servers don't have or need 8GB and you can run quite a few OS virtualization in 4GB or even 2GB.

If you want more performance from games get a better GPU if you need more pep in your apps get a quad core CPU!

With the cheap cost of RAM, then why not? With Vista, I'd say 4gb is the best to aim for, not 2gb. 2gb to 4gb on Vista makes a significant difference, whilst 4gb to 8gb does not.

RAM is cheap, 2 people in here have said they have managed to use only 6gb, with memory intensive programs, and others have said there's improvement in game caching and load times.

So 8gb sounds like a good idea considering the prices and some things that have been mentioned in here. The only arguments against are that it's a waste, But the arguments for show that it's not.

Tempted to go with a beefy memory upgrade next time I buy components, No such thing as too much memory, It will always get used as time passes.

I have 8gb installed on my workstation in work, 4gb is dedicated to a ram drive where I have about 95% of my apps installed, couple of small databases, plus windows temp folder.

It's an absolute dream to use.... shame I have to come home and use my 2gb limited laptop, although I still have a small 256mb ramdrive for firefox etc.

Yeah, Crysis definately benefits for me, I go over 4gb with Crysis and level loading times are definately faster. Alt+tab is also better over 4gb..

@Bigsy

What software do you use for a ramdrive? If it's free (or cheap!) I'd be grateful if you could post a link.

I use 8GB for custom software, I end up using just under 7GB at full load when running simulations. I think it does actually limit my o/c on an abit IP35-PRO but the temps on the pwm are as much of a factor, if not more.

My only concern atm is the upgrade cycle, and having to wait for DDR3 to fall to current DDR2 levels. Otherwise on V64U it works very well indeed. To be honest, there's not a lot of gaming/commercial apps that need >4GB, but as has been said before, its so cheap right now, anybody building a 2+ year system should get good value out of it.

merry xmas mate :).
