Rant: Why can't cinemas sort thier sound out?

Me and my lady walked out of Odeon (ex Easy Cinema, should stick to planes) which watching Die Hard 4. The sound was terrible, I don't even think the surround sound was working it was like mono. Watched it a couple of months later on my £800 system and was blown away :)

Because 90% of people that go to the cinema don't notice the difference, and if they installed a speaker system that cost twice the amount, they just wouldn't appreciate it.

My local cinema, i think it's either ugi or cineworld now, about 10 years old I guess, sounds fine, not enough bass (though I blame the room acoustic) but very good clarity.

I care only a small amount about the quality, as long as i know whats going on and we're not splitting hairs, i'm ones of those guys who cares more about the music playing rather than quality of it, i still got most of my old vinyl and an old record player my parents let me have when they got a cd player. Which most audiophiles would throw their hands up in the air at, oh well, i like it.

I've never had too much of a problem with our locals; although Odeon definitely has better sound than Vue here....

Odd seeing as I demand high quality stuff at home, esspecially headphones.

The local cinema's sound system that they have it awsome, i love it, the bass, the special effects, fading techniques in films, its brilliant, but to be honest, its been made within the last 8 or so years.. so its pretty modern.

Infact, thats the Odean.

Cineworld has been built even newer than that. That place is awsome for sound quality, especially in their more expensive room.

The surround system at the London IMAX cinema seemed pretty good. Shame they have no idea how to use it though.

Well being a projectionist in a cinema I can honestly hold my hand up and say our sound system is crap.

I don't think all the channels work in any of our screens.

For the last three years the sound in one of our screens has been getting progressively worse and constantly distorts to the point where I recommend people not to watch the film while in that screen.

We've had a Dolby Sound Technician over to check our sound and basically all our amps will have to be returned for repair and recalibration.

As a projectionist there's only so much control I have over the sound quality, we have a test track which we're meant to play through the projector and recalibrate the sound every month or so but being a very busy cinema and the bosses being to tight to pay for us to come in outside normal operating hours things like this just don't get done on a regular basis.

We're now on bypass (Only one channel) on four of our screens which means the sound is even worse, or in the case of the screen mentioned earlier, slightly better.
