9800 GX2 Feb 19th

Dont like the look of that, and esp since I read it will be a 256bit interface for 1 GB Memory.

Prob is same card and fake info.
If it's anything like the original GX2 it will be advertised as a 1gb card but only have 512mb of available as it's two cards splitting the total.

Just be a simplistic/compact/convenient SLi'd 8800GT or GTS configuration.

If games sees this as a single card and it's effective, it'll be great :) But i think this is basically bogus, anything but releasing a single killer effective card would be pointless.

That was said about the 7950GX2 but once the drivers had matured (like most cards) it was a killer piece of hardware.

I 'had' to upgrade to an 8800GTX to beat it as the 8800GTS 640mb wasn't far enough ahead to justify the upgrade cost.

I see no reason why this shouldn't be a good card. Based on how 8800GT's perform in SLi should give everyone an idea of how this could perform if done right.

Why do they bother wasting 512mb of ram and putting it on when it cant be used?
As i mentioned above. Each core will probably use half of the 1gb not the whole amount.

I'm still hoping that D9E and D9P are the code names of the chips themselves and not the cards, then this will be a variation on D9E and we'll probably get a single card solution. Not interested in this SLI hodge-podge tech.

So both cores did use 512mb of the memory? or 256mb each? So why when you have 2x GT's or w/e do you only get 512mb memory, the other 512mb is not used

Each core has it's own identical set of information saved in its own set of ram - bitmap and texture details etc. 1gb in total is used but it's two identical copies (512mb each) of the same info for the game level.

If you decided to go SLi and get another 8800GT each card would get the exact same information sent to it from the PC. That way when split frame or alternate frame rendering is used each card has all the information it needs to display the game correctly. It would be far too complicated to send exactly what the card needs as it needs it so they both get it all at once.

It's then the job of the SLi hardware on the mobo of an SLi board or the SLi bridge chip on the GX2 to sycronise each so you get smooth gameplay and a performance boost.

Ew, this doesn't make sense, I thought the D9E was the next gen card not two G92 bolted together? Surely that is the 8850/8950 ?

The problems with quad SLI aren't ones you easily sort out...

As nVidia doesn't seem to have an appropriate 8800 Mobile part this time around I would suspect the new GX2 will be 2x 8800GTS 512Mb board with the cores clocked back to around 550MHz and lower core voltage... if they are anything like the 7950GX2 they should overclock back to GTS performance tho and for those brave enough to volt mod overclock pretty much as well as the GTS. Performance wise I would suspect it will perform pretty much the same as 2x 8800 Ultra in SLI, most people being too CPU limited to see any substantial gains at lower resolutions and at high enough res/settings to see the double performance boost you'd be talking about an average of 6fps boosted to 11fps ;)

Unless the 9800GTX comes out around the same time I'll prolly grab one as its the only upgrade currently thats really worth it over my GX2.

These will probably be the last Massive single core cards IMO.
Next generation card will probably be multi core. I think ATI and Nvidia will be using these cards as test to sort out the software.

This is all based from some fudzilla crap but tbh i think he's correct on this one.
