Hi all,

I have finally convinced my wife that our 32" 720P LG LCD is looking a bit small on our wall in the living room. Want to replace it with a full 1080P 40 inch LCD with a budget of £700-£750 max. TV will be used for Sky Digital & XBOX 360. Any recommendations please?

Merry Christmas

Andrew

Samsung LE40M87BDX. £739.99 inc delivery

Ive just been with my Farther in Law to take one of these back as he was very disappointed with the picture quality.
Ive got a Pionner Plasma and I went round yesterday as he was having probelms setting his Samsung LCD up to get a good picture and after about 90 minutes of messing around and trying various settings suggested on AV Forums we could get the picture looking OK but no where as good as he was expecting.
He was just using Sky and the internal digital tuner and im sure it would have looked better with a HD signal but he wants it mainly for Sky.
We took it back and he's got a credit note and im pretty sure he will be getting a Panasonic Plasma after Christmas.
Ive also got a Samsung 26" LCD that looks fantastic so im not sure whether the 40" one he had was faulty but I have seen it mentioned on What Hi-Fi that the quality can alter between sets and the What Hi-Fi editor said that the review set they had was better than some other sets they have since had.

What settings did you change/set to then?

I went through THIS thread on AV forums (and another) and tried various settings suggested, you have to be careful as there are settings for all the 86/87/88 models all mixed together on there.
I cant remember the exact settings we used but reducing the contrast, increasing the back light and turning off the bits that you have to scroll down to in the menu (cant remember what they were :) ) helped make SD TV look a lot better.
To be honest with a bit more tweaking I probably would have been happy with it as we got it looking a lot better than it was out of the box but I think by this time my Farther in Law was getting fed up and just wanted to take it back for a new one.

That tv is, excellent. Picture in Standard definition stuff is brill, tbh unless you watch mostly hd stuff, SD quality is the most important feature of a telly.

Heres how you can use your sky remote to control the samsumg:
Depends on the version of your remote.
If there is no version information under the battery cover then assume its version 1.

version 1 code is 088
version 4/5/6 code is 646

sky hd remote rev.8F is 840

3-digit codes are entered like this:

1. Turn on the TV

2. Press TV on the Sky Remote Control

3. Hold down SELECT and the RED buttons together for approximately two seconds, until the red LED on the Sky remote blinks twice.

4. Enter three digit code from list for the TV (early versions now flash twice).

5. Press select to submit the code (the LED will flash twice if a valid code has been entered).

6. Now press the STDBY button and test other functions
(From av forums)

Its reading reviews like that that make me think the one my Farther in Law had was faulty, I felt a little guilty as I was the one that recommended the Samsung to him but the one he had just wasn't right.

Might also want to consider this:

I know its *only* a 37" set although having personally seen it side by side in a hifi shop with the Samsung personally I think it has the edge on the Sammy especially with black depth. Although I still ended up with the Samsung in the end as at the time I was buying the Panasonic was just over £300 more expensive, although I think they can be had for pretty much the same price now.
