I'm after a plasma/LCD TV and haven't a clue in what to look for and who make the best that i can afford.

I've been putting off buying one and got some good news today with a new job and so the boss says i can go out and spend up to £2000 on a TV. Although i think this is a little to much and would probably look at about £1200 - 1400.

Size wise i'd like something either 42" or bigger and thats about as much as i know.

What else should i really be looking at when buying a TV?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sean

He could go for a Pioneer Kuros. These are regarded as the best HD Plasmas around.

What do you intend to display on this TV? High Definition (HD), Standard Def (SD), computer images/displays? Is this for your workplace or the home?

For SD, the Panasonic TH42PX70 beats everything else out there. If HD is your thing then the Pioneer Kuro range wins.

If you want to spend the full £2k then buy the Pioneer PDP-508XD.

Basically, you will buy either a Panasonic or a Pioneer.

Thanks for both replies, I think i've set my mind on the Panasonic ph50pz70b as recommended by Hedge.

After reading numerous reviews and reading the AV forums i think it's a good choice.

I'll be mainly watching SD on the set with my DLink media streamer playing all my films that i've ripped ;), and at the moment have no intention of using it for gaming. Hopefully getting Sky HD in the near future, If this is not the best plasma for what i need please someone let me know before i buy in the next few days.

Many thanks

Sean

From what Ive read, the Panasonic TH42PX70 is the best plasma around for displaying SD images. It is better than the more expensive PZ series (for SD images).

AVForums is a good place to do your research though, so perhaps you can ask there and see what they say.

Croni, youve made a very good choice - i have that same set and stream media to it,watch SD sky and play games on it, it's awesome and the PQ just blows me away.

For the money it's the best bang-for-buck tv around.

Sony 40X3500 1080P 24P ;)

Although fantastic when displaying HD material, its performance when playing SD material is not really known by many. If previous LCD TVs are anything to go by, then SD material on this panel will be poor.

Besides, I dont think the Sony 40X3500 would be able to compete with the Pioneer Kuro when playing HD material.

From what I know the best plasma tvs are better than the best LCD tvs, for SD and (marginally) for HD.

Another point is that the Pioneer is 2" larger than the 40X3500 and can be had for the same price. The Sony LCD would be a poor choice right now.

Ordered th 42" Panasonic as the room would be taken over by the TV and the boss would not have been happy.

Hopefully she'll be happy, I know i am.
