Borked 8800GT or drivers ?

as has been said, sounds like core artifacting. I think you were just unlucky to get a duff card. My 8800 gtx oc (bfg) has not protested with anything i've thrown at it, plus they have the lifetime warranty :)

You usually tell me you test stuff you buy 2nd hand, how come these artifacts and crashes didnt show up or was it just a quick power on and get to windows test?

Also since the guy sold you it he might not take it back since 2nd hand stuff you dont legally have to accept it back, so good luck with that.

Hope you get it sorted as i knew from msn you were very excited and were hoping for bragging rights with ** dutch mates lol. Btw have you tryed anything like motherboard drivers updates, use driver cleaner to remove old nvidia drivers and the other stuff like nview etc. Reseated it, checked its getting enough power etc through everest reports of the volts etc and tryed putting more juiced through with volts through mb to the pcie slot?

Also have you tryed 169.28 beta drivers for vista?

Also some guy here says its a problem with the gt cards and the asus mb's one of the bottom posts in here So might be compatability prob not a actual prob with the card itself.

Also here are reports of similar red artifacting in ut3 games with a EVGA brand 8800gt.

It doesn't show up on a 3dm06 run, it onyl shows up after several minutes of stress, some engines more sensitive than others, for example CoH is fine for an hour or so but bioshock crashed always in the first 15 minutes.

The card works fine as far as I can tell on the p5b series. The m2n4 doesn't have pciex 1.1 unlike me.
The 12 v lines are solid same udner load as idle, it should get enough juice, I find it hard to believe it's a driver problem when I get the same artifacting ( diff bsod info tho) in both xp and vista.
I have used drivercleaner in xp and did the driver install properly, it's imo def not that.

Renember tho I later updated it and it happens in ALL games, UT3 games are just a lot more sensitive to it, but when played longer, CoH, CoD4, halo2, etcetc all have problems.

Nvm though im going to return it tomoz and just get one in shop from a reputable brand, perhaps a factory oc version if i find a cheap one, EVGA interest me in particular for the step-up program, I can get the 9600 series in feb when they're out and just return my 8800GT for full value.
Money ain't a prob for xmas I got some extra bonus money from family all in all I have 370 € now, wich is more than enough for a geil 2gb kit and a new good brand 8800GT.

The guy said that with toruble i can always reutrn it, if he won't accept it after all, then I'll just go through the weeks of RMA procedure and try to stay patient, but ahwell life aint always great, I should be glad I still have 23 months of retailer and 35 months of factory warranty. Better than a total loss of money.

Maybe worth staying away from the factory overclocked GT's, the EVGA SSC is a good example, it tended to overheat quite easily. Maybe if money is not an issue go for a GTS 512 or GTX??

I don't really need something better now though, a GT is enough, I'd prefer to keep the rest for a new hdd or something , I can ALWAYS use more hdd space. A new mouse would be nice too. I just play at 1280x1204 mostly, sometimes 1600x1200 and in 1 game ( supcom) 2560x1024, I dont think I need a GTS or GTX for that. I won't mind dropping a few details tbh, I think the saved money from not getting a gts is better used on other stuff like perhaps a logitech momo wheel for LFS or new speakers or a new hdd or a new mouse, more worth the cash imo than that extra 4x AA.

makes sense, just dont waste your money of an overclocked GT job unless it has Samsung 1.0ns memory and Nippon Chemi-con capacitors, neither of which are commonly used on GT's.
Around here overclocked GT's are nearly as much as GTS 512s

just glanced read but think your on vista try go safe mode uninstall drivers restart in normal mode disable aero reinstall drivers and then renable aero or leave it disabled. My card was weird on desktop with artifacting but not in games but disabling and renabling aero fixed it.

first impressions is your card is foooked however do all you can before you send it back. clean install/newest drivers/game patches etc.

I really, really don't think the cooling solution on the 8800gt is suitable. there is talk on the net that nvidea boosted the clock as much as poss to beat out the 3870 from ati. if true that will make the card run much hotter that origonally designed to. a lot of people runn them without issue though so maybe it could be worth looking at your case ventilation also. front and rear fans in your system? no blockage of airflow with things like ide cables and the like?

P.S. i hate asus and their ****** drivers for their extended features. they really are a load of ****. the crap i used to get with my x800xt (which i still have) trying to use their extended featurs (the only damn reason i got the card) was beond a joke. I really dont ever want to buy an asus card again as their extended suport is basicly none existant. I even think OCUK stopped stocking there cards at one point due to their rma being so ****.. (am i right on that?)

He's on XP.

Called retailer today they said they've found the card faulty indeed, and I'm gona get a replacement, gona give me a call tomoz as he said he can't find it atm but with any luck I can go pick it up tomorrow :D.

Brilliant news. A good start to 2008 ;).

So they didn’t just pop the card in and see if the bios appeared on screen?
Fair play, they must have actually tested it!!!

Yeah, when I first gave it to them they said they'll test it immediatly if I want, they ended up running just 3dm06 for an hour and nothing showed up, I told them afterwards to try an UT3 game, they said testing will probs take till after newyear in that case, I guess they did test it with an actual game as on phone they said the card was found faulty still the same day I delivered it.

Well they couldn't just test it to bios as the complaint was obviously artifacts and bsod's in heavy gaming, as put down on the service receipt and I brought them 4 printed screencaps showing the trouble:

Artifacts in Bioshock, CoD4.
And an artifacted BSOD screen from both XP and Vista.

Ahwell just glad they actually properly tested the card as I'd be a bit angry if they said no fault found when I've tried it in total on 2 OS-es on my own pc and in my dads pc.

Bad news, any 8800GT card is not in stock.

Now I don't know what to do:

I can't request money back as the receipt is on name and I'm not the original buyer so the money will end up on not my account. Best I can do is get my original 200 back from the original buyer.

I can get a better card with addig extra money:
The 640 mb GTS for 20 € extra- NO, don't want it.
The G92 512 mb GTS for 60 damn euro's extra. Is this card worth the premium? Mind I play mostly @ 1280x1024.

Or wait 4 damn weeks till it's back in stock, wich I do not want to do either, as I want a card now tbh.

Well for starters you do not want the 640mb GTS as that would be a downgrade, so looks like either waiting for it to come back into stock, or adding the extra for the new GTS, but the GTS is not worth £60 extra, as at 1280x1024, your only going to be looking at a couple of frames here/there (which is why i cancelled my GTS as im on 1280x1024, and its just not worth it at that res, your getting same performance just about), just depends if you can wait for the GT (which you said you can't), or get the GTS and upgrade to a bigger screen which it will do better than the GT over, or if you want a card now, just pay the extra £60 for the GTS, and juts do with it at 1280x1024, what a pickle your in. :(

60 euro's renember that's errr 43 quid approx.
Problem is I want a new card NOW, not in 4 weeks, and I'm feeling shafted as they said they'd swap it 2 times when I called em.
I can't get a bigger screen, no money at all left anymore just have 70 €'s left from it all...
How much faster exactly is an 8800GTS compared to a GT? In terms of fps ?
If lets say I have 35 FPS on the GT, how much would that be on the GTS ?

Are you sure it will take 4 weeks, i would have thought they would get deliverys in per week. Also about the original owner, well use him to get money back its ** card now so the extra money u get will be urs not his anymore. Thems the breaks im afraid for him. Then when u get the money from shop go find a 8800gt in a near by shop, with the extra you got u should be able to get a new one for the money u got back surely.

Failing that, well perhaps just get ** money off the man u bought from sell ** 6800 card and u should have enough to buy a new 8800gt instead of used. Which is probably what i would do if it were me and wanted a card in a few days.

Up to you but best of luck how you go mate. I know how its been as u been tellin me on msn so hope it gets sorted in a favourable way.
