So clearly something wrong here. Specs:

X2 3800+
2GB BH5
MSI K8N Neo4
HIS 512MB 1900XT UNDERCLOCKED

Stressing it hard by playing games like CoH @ 2560 x 1600 maxed out (only AF) it hits 100oC (even though the core and ram are underclocked by 100mhz) and ATI tool tells me that it is overheating. Now clearly there is something wrong here and I either need to reseat the cooler or get a new one. Now I would prefer just reseat the current one. So, two questions: Has anyone had any experience with these cards and heat issues? What do I need? It looks like the card is quite bent under the stress of the cooler and so the ram sinks wouldn't attach to the ram with just standard Arctic silver (there are some sort of thermal pad on there at the moment)

I RMA'd two X1900XTs in 2007 through heat issues.

Even at resolutions well below the one you mentioned, it still got around 80oC and above - full fan speed. But that's supposedly normal.

That was with the stock cooler which is very loud and not very effective (it just about does the job imo) - I've heard a lot of good things about alternative coolers (quieter and more effective) but after my last two experiences with ATi cards, it'll be hard for me to have anything other than nVidia in the future.

IceQ version?

I replaced the TIM on my XTX IceQ and was able to drop fan speeds by 40% for the same temp or 55C vs 60C for the same fan speed.

Try it :)

Infact anyone who hasn't dooo itt!!

Made a big diff to me, also increased my clocks from 709/836 @ 1.45/2.089 to 729/845 @ 1.525V/2.089 :)

Lucky Your last two experiences at the time were not the nVidia 7900 that where dieing by the truckload or your statement would be the reverse.
In other words both makers have there issues with faulty cards & no side is better than the other in this regard & is off topic.

You wont be able to put AS5 on the ram, there are mounts on the ram sinks that stops you over tightening the screws & screwing the thermal pads flat.
So if your going to take the ram sinks off i'd suggest you buy thermal pads first.

Its a bit of a coincidence that yours has hit 100C because my HIS X1900XT did xmas eve.
Mine however is because the fan has failed, it started to rattle then finally hit the inside casing & stopped.

Just waiting for me S1 to arrive now & bathe in the silence.

no fluff but I will have a go at replacing the TIM on it. Any idea about the ramsink issue?

leave it.

Just place a fan along the card to give it a little more air over the mem sinks as the cooler fan doesn't do *that* gooder job.
:)

When replacing the cooler, get all 4 screws in with about 3 turns, then work diagonally with them. IE, NE, SW, NW, SE doing a turn at a time. Use a thin screwdriver because they you can't over-tighten because when its tight enough it will just spin in your hand (unless your incredibly strong ;))

It depends, I was disappointed with the stock cooler on the card -it was as if zero effort to make it quiet had been put into it. Just stupidly loud noises.

I don't see how it's off topic, two X1900XTs toasted themselves for me and left me without a graphics card for months. The op is complaining of high temps of the same card.

I've had two nVidia cards and two ATi cards in my time - never had a problem with nVidia cards but have had problems with even the replacements of faulty ATi cards.

I'm not instigating a fan-boy riot or suggesting anyone with an ATi card is an idiot, just talking of my personal experiences.

Must have been unlucky.

Two X1900s here and they are fine :) Plus the other 3 X1950XT/XTX/Pro i've tested as well.

My experience with nvidia has been awful so each to their own I guess :p
