It seems Lampard's injury that he sustained against West Ham could be more serious than first thought. This type of injury supposedly takes up to six weeks to heal properly, Chelsea have said that they expect him to return sooner than that though.

Any Chelsea fans out there getting slightly worried?

What with the African Nations Cup, and a fair few of your big name players out injured.

Thats Terry, Drogba, Lampard all injured with Cech playing through his injury and Essien, Mikel, Kalou, Drogba (when/if he gets fit) off to the ACoN, and Cole possibly missing pending his red card appeal.

Imagine manyoo missing Rooney, Ronaldo, Rio, Vidic, Evra along with not having Neville, and having Van der Sar playing through injury. Or Liverpool missing Torres, Gerrard, Reina, Carragher, Alonso and Kewell, or Arsenal missing Fabregas, Flamini, Gallas, van Persie, Almunia and Toure.

Without a lot of players coming in (and better ones than, say, Ben Haim who has looked awful) they're going to struggle to mount any kind of challenge for the league.

Fortunately for Chelsea, on paper they can replace Terry with Carvalho (ban aside), Lampard with Ballack and Drogba with Shevchenko. Form has been a bit suspect from pair who bag over £1m/month between them though.

or imagine a season where, Scholes is out, Neville is out, VDS is playin injured, Rio out, Hardcheese has only played couple of games due to injury, Saha out for majority of games so far too.

oh yea and we made it to the top of the table, despite our worst start to a premiership ever?

We've had similar problems for a few games this season. No RvP, Hleb, Cesc, Flamini, Diaby plus i'm sure Gallas was out during that time too. Every team should be able to cope short term but it will take it's toll if it stays like that.

Scholes is out but you're lucky Anderson has made the transition so easily, Rio has played 17 games this season (50% more than Terry), Saha is rubbish, Hargreaves hasn't been relied on in previous seasons like Lampard has, he's not an integral part of the side yet. So if thats the best you can come up with you need to go back to the drawing board :)

Didn't know VDS was injured. Whats he done?

Thats what I mean, all those players will be missing at the same time for up to 6 weeks. Cole could miss 3 games, and would be the shorter missing personnel. Lampard, Drogba, Kalou, Mikel, Terry and Essien are out for weeks at the same time.

well he has a strain i think, he came off at half time a few games ago and Kusckak has been covering..

yep - http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_3002971,00.html

Yes its lucky that Anderson is amazing, and that we brought Tevez in,. otherwise we would have been stuffed, ala chelsea would we not? Saha is our Drogba, but so far has not performed consistently well. Vidic also got injured early doors this season..

so say, Mikel was as good as anderson, maybe they wouldnt be in the same state?

Mikel is also missing. I named him above. How would manyoo have fared without Anderson or Scholes recently?

Fine, beat Sunderland 4-0 without them. As far as I know Cole will only be suspended for one game anyway won't he?

Yes Chelsea's injury/suspension list is building up. But in the summer they bought complete rubbish as cover whereas United spent big and brought in quality. It's not as if Chelsea didn't have the money to do the same.

I suspect we would have struggled. I very much doubt the infuriating player that is Carrick would have managed to perform so well in the bigger games (Arsenal, Liverpool) as Anderson has. I am so impressed with him so far, thought it would be a much longer transition period.

Anyway, back on topic. That is an awful lot of high quality players to have missing, and my feeling is that they will struggle even if Ballack & Shevchenko (who finally started to show some of his undoubted ability on Boxing Day) do fill in well.

Mind you, if they do bring in a few players during the window, when everyone is back again they will have a pretty hefty squad! What's happened to Sidwell by the way, is he available at the moment?

I thought it was a straight red? In which case it should be 3 games.

Under a different manager though, with different ideas. Grant shouldn't really be judged for that.

Being forced to play Ben Haim is worse than being forced to play Silvestre, to put it into perspective.

Sidwell seems to be rotting away in the reserves.

Lord knows why he signed for Chelsea, he's a good player but must have known he wasn't going to figure in their fist team plans. Must be the money *shrugs*

We did quite well the end of last season, despite losing the majority of our squad through injury. Say what you may about Saha, he's the only other decent striker we've got if we lose either Tevez or Rooney.

Isn't a 3 game ban for violent conduct? I'm not sure really

I think it's a 1 match ban for a red, but can go up to 3 depending on the severity of the incident. But I'm not sure either to be honest, that's the way I've always thought it worked though.

It depends on the severity of the offence. Plus, the red card is being appealed. If this is denied and is seen to be frivolous, it could even be extended past the 1-3 match ban guide.

With the money spent at Chelsea since Abramovich bought them over, you'd think they'd have a pretty sweet squad by now with plenty of depth. The likes of Terry and Cech should not be forced to come back early from injury as it is really evident that it hasn't done them a lot of good, continually getting niggling injuries and never fully recovering from them. The staff should take some of that responsibility, and the player too especially if they are the ones telling the physios porkies to get back playing a.s.a.p.

And I'd put money on Lampard being back within 4 weeks.

I don't get why they are appealing. If the appeal is successful surely thats like admitting the decision was wrong, the penalty shouldn't have been given and Chelsea should have won 4-3?

Infact I can't remember the last time I read about a successful appeal.

Given that the pen/red at the other end was just as dubious it would have finished 3-3 ;)
