Hi All,

Anyone here bought a banana Thermalright 120 Extreme HSF and managed to lap away the error? Brand new just delivery and yet there is a 0.8mm!!!! difference between the middle and the outside edges. Clearly there has been a lapse in QC by TR.

QC by TR is a contradiction in terms. A lot of threads on lapping are about this very problem. Some people have tried to RMA the cooler but thermalright are not having any of it. It's 'designed' that way apparently!

I'm not going to even bother contacting them - I'm just gunna lap it and not buy their sinks again.

Just bought a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme, spent about 5 hours lapping it (an hour each day)

If you do lapp yours a little tip - use fairy liquid or something similar to make it glide easily along the various sand papers, I used 400, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit, to be honest I was quite happy at 1500 grit.

i avoid definate statements because I don't know everything, and would get shot down if i got it wrong =p

So it's designed that way. What proof do you have to backup that statement. You'll forgive me for suggesting otherwise, but to have so much pressure in the middle of the CPU would sure to god do damage!!! I have already had a RAM and it has been accepted. If you guys are saying you have lapped the issue away and all was well then I'll do the same as this HSF certainly gets a lot of praise.

Thanks

The topic of TR ballsup and some buying into the BS its supposed to be that way has been discussed time and time again, the other thread got removed 2 days ago because of the HEAT is caused.

Please read at XS my opinions and others cause it will simply get into a fight here.

if it wasnt designed that way it would be really really hard to machine them so wrongly

infact its cheaper to machine something flat than machine it concave anyway

god knows why they did it

Well simplify the arguement :)

Once lapped it is the best cooler on the market no question

Pre-Lapping it may be either a) an expensive paper weight or leathal weapon (those fins are sharp!) b) an excellent cooler (had two out of the box that were virtually flat with few machine marks) or c) something inbetween

imo i dont call them good coolers my E6600 idles at 48 on both cores WITH C1E and all that crap enabled so it runs at 2550mhz at full load it hits 66 ish (3400mhz) at 3600mhz it goes over 75 degrees absolute **** cooler
