With some Christmas money burning a hole in my pocket, and with a need to play some football games on my Xbox 360 I was wondering which game was better to get, PES08 or Fifa 08.

I've heard good and bad things about both but I wanted to check the opinions of people on here, preferrably from people who have played both and can give as much of an unbiased opinion as possible.

FIFA without doubt.

PES is a good alternative that I've been playing more of but still a long way behind EA's latest installment.

Makes me laugh when I read posts from people (not saying in this thread, just in general) or talk to people who have slated Fifa for years, saying it will never change, that it will always be parp and it's absolute rubbish blah blah blah.... now turning around proclaiming its great and the best thing ever :)

Going against the flow - but PES8 is the best game of football you'll get. Fifa is best presented - least buggy - best looking and sounding, but it doesnt play like Pro Evo. Despite its flaw's Pro Evo just seems more rewarding to play.

I think your find a lot of people, myself included, have been forced to go down the FIFA route due to Konami releasing PES 2008 half finished.

Personally I still prefer PES 2008 in the gameplay stakes over FIFA 08, however a big part of a football game for me is the ability to play it online which is a joke on PES 2008 due to it being unplayable 95% of the time.

The best pes was 4 since then the series has stagnated and not much has changed, fifa on the other hand was total carp for a few years until now and fifa 08 is truly the best football game out atm. I have had 07 on 360 since release as well and repeatedly said then that fifa is on the way up and 08 has shown clearly that the fifa series is not to be scoffed at anymore.

I prefer Pro Evo 2008 to fifa, fifa looked good but that was about it for me. Fifa just seemed like i wasnt controlling the game whereas pro evo just felt like i was playing and had little nuances that made it feel like real football more than Fifa.

I was one of them, but I didn't resort to FIFA because PES08 was poor, I played the FIFA demo and enjoyed it which I haven't done since FIFA 98. I then bought PES. PES is far too arcadey and rediciously quick, PES6 speed was right, not sure why they changed it. FIFA feels slow until you've played lots but it's a lot more realistic than PES which is what I like, I'm talking gameplay here. Unlike PES, I can't pick a ball up with John Terry and run the whole pitch too shoot, thats what annoys me with PES. It's just pass and run as quick as possible whereas FIFA needs patience and you need to build up your attacks, this however, frustrates people which is a shame.

You absolutely nailed it, I was talking to my friend about how ridiculous the pace is in Pes...and how easy it is in single player, I could quite easily win 4 or 5-0 on world class whilst on world class in Fifa its more tight 2-1 scorelines and legendary well It always ends in a draw or 1-0 for me.

My dad is having the same dilemma :P
What is the actual difference between the two?

PES is a horror show and went backwards so much so that everything about the game is inferior to Fifa this year. Incredibly so.
I would say every single thing about Fifa is better such as the graphics, sound, commentary, teams, multiplayer, controls, skills, stadiums, manager mode, character creation, and game modes.

I agree with that.

Hopefully the next PES will be something special. Did you ever compare PES6 on PS2 and PES6 on xbox360? They were totally different, the PS2 version was really quick and smooth whereas the 360 version was slow and cumbersome.
