Spare wheel safe to drive on?

woke up this morning to see my rear tyre totally flat, went up to my tyre guy, pulled the screw out, inner walls in bits tyre ******.

he wont have a replacement til 2 jan.

My rear tyres are normally 265/35/18, the spare (in bmws wisdom) is a 225/55/16.

How safe/unsafe would it be to drive on with this on the rear (obviously taking it easier)

notwithstanding the issue of now no longer having a spare either!!

Wouldn't have thought that BMW would put a tyre in thats dangerous, then again I wouldn't drive it too hard as it might stress your diff a bit
 
find a quick fit? I know they're not the most competitively priced, but they keep a lot of sizes in stock and are open practically every day, ive even been to them on easter, so maybe xmas might be open too?

That wheel is classed as a spacesaver on your car - you can use it but you should not exceed 50km/h IIRC. It's designed to get you to the tyre depot and not really any further.
 
As fox says they aint ment for normal use. just as a way to get your car to the place where it can be fixed. Ive seen the results of a space saver used in the wrong way. it ended in a dead MGZR.. a knacked tree and two people in hospital. least thats one less ZR tho :P

Indeed they are limited mileage use, never ceases to amaze me as cars with them fitted hurtle past me @ 80+ :eek::rolleyes:

i don't know why putting it on the front would be a good move.
you can control your acceleration and top speed, but you can't control when you might have to break hard. and under braking, even with RWD, the front wheels do most of the work. hence uneven front tyres would be more likely to make you spin under heavy braking.

TBH, I just stick the spare on whichever wheel is flat and take it to the local garage. I can't be bothered swapping wheels around.

If I have a "moment"; sods law dictates it will be the one where the spare would have been better on the other end.

i drove 50miles on my mates (i "broke" two wheels so needed 2 spares) space saver @ 50mph... most boring jorney ever (so slow)... But the tyre was worn out after that!

erm why is it classed as a space saver? its a full size 16" alloy wheel? the manual makes no ref to reduced speed?

i havent driven it yet but may need to soon as dad needs his car back! :D and my replacement wont be in stock til next week
 
As long as the outside diameter is the same as the other tyres it's perfectly safe to drive on but be aware the difference in width will make your brakes unpredictable if you have to use them to the max. I would definitely keep it on the back because most of your braking occurs at the front and you want maximum control. Be safe though, keep the speed down :)

That can hardly be described as "Perfectly safe" imo.

I thought it was 50mph?
