Best Cooler (Q6600)

Yep, I've managed to get my Q6600 stable at 3.5ghz with max temps of 58c under full load :)

Its a new build im just gonna run a long stress test for stablity, Im well pleased with the Tuniq though.

Hey guys - I thought the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler was the best cooler for Q6600?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-039-TR&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=821

I see it is out of stock at the moment ; and often they dont have flat base's and need 'lapping'

Does the Tuniq Tower have a nice flat base? - what OC's have people got? - No offense Ranger07 but Q6600 @ 2.7 is not all that good!.. Not if for an extra £10 you can get to 3.6?

the thermalright ultra 120 extreme is the best cooler for a q6600, however the tuniq tower comes in at a very close second.

the TRUE also needs a 120mm fan which must be brought seperatly and as you said suffers from curved bases.

also it could be ranger07,s MB holding him back or his sig is out of date as he said he had it at 3.5 stable in his post

Tuniq Tower if you are looking for upto 3.5/3.6Ghz anything over that and you will need a Ultra-120... As has already been mentioned you may have to lap the base of the U120... tbh I have had 4 in the last couple of months for various builds and all have had pretty decent bases...

Your clock will ultimatley be down to the quality of the CPU you get.. one that run on nice low volts will clock well no matter the cooler.. a lot of people post I get XXghz @ XX temps which really isnt a good comparision... load temps are down to a number of factors and you shouldnt just be looking at the Heatsink but also the fans you are using with it, your case airflow etc..

@ stock (2.4Ghz, 1.2 vCore) on my Ultra 120 my rig loads at around 20c on all cores (or no higher than ambient) but thats with a very good Q6600 that runs on low voltage and in a system that has some serious airflow

Nice clock, your temp seems quite low though? Are they correct or perhaps you have the PC on a bench near an open window?

another thumbs up for the tower, temps under 40c load all cores using AS5
Is that 40°C or 55°C?

Now that sounds impossible! :)

Sits under my desk :)

With an open window :)

3.5Ghz @ 58c is well within the range of aircooling :)

3825MHz @ 1.488v
62°C Load

4023MHz @ 1.536v
54°C Load!

WTF, it must be in an open case and the room must be freezing?

And what fan/rpm is that?

[edit] thanks for the screenies, have u got one with the cores loaded at 20°C :D

These are testing temps surely? I cant see how they can be maintained for 24/7 clocks?

3825 clock was done with the case closed @ "normal" room temperature, the 4023 run was with the side off and window open :)

Is more info in the thread below.. just a log of an evening messing around with screenies and a video of my rig going :) 20c pics in that thread as well

Haha good one I enjoyed that, this is kinda 'extreme' air cooling though, reminds me of when I was overclocking the E4300 back in January (2007)

My set-up looks awefully similar to yours!

Thermalright Ultra-120 and YS-Tech 120mm 'Kraken'

Gotta love those 120mmx38mm monsters  (and it was snowing the night I tested).

I think if you refere to your 'uber' low temp results in other posts it may be useful if you make it clear the circumstances were extreme, still valid of course but If I had realised you were sitting in a room that was 8°C ambient with a 120mm 'screamer' I probably wouldn't have questioned you lol! :o

true :)

the last load temps taken at stock were at around "room temp" after I had got bored of sitting in the cold and turned the heating up lol

Hey guys.. I was once known to do some Extreme AIR cooling in the past - by burying my PC under the floorboards - This gives a 10C drop in temps compared with the heated room.

http://www.fortunecity.co.uk/skyscraper/byte/30/pcunderground.htm

The advantage during the winter (about now;-) is even greater.

My pc has been down there since 2002 when I had a XP2000 ! obviously dug up a few times to upgrade.

I've been considering upgrading to Q6600 with Abit Ip35 pro & 4gb PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series (see my sig for current spec)

How much effect does the Ambient temps have on general CPU cooling? One would think is was very much how well the heatsink can get it away from the CPU rather the normal case / room temp.

Pneumonic obvioulsy has proven otherwise? - I'm sure the eskimos could overclock it some more - but you obvioulsy have a good example Q6600 ;-)

I don't think I can be arsed to lapp the 120 (not at that price) so if the Tuniq tower comes pre lapped (i.e nice flat surface) then that may be the better bet for me - or maybe with my advantage I could even go with a cheap Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro ? or (dont diss me now) the retail cooler.

I'm only interested in hitting 3.6ghz - what do you think?

Those must be the last working sticks of Crucial Anniversary in existence!
Why is that Walter? I didn't know there was a problem?

I had got bored of sitting in the cold and turned the heating up lol
I like extreme tests, they are totally valid but some poor ****** is gonna be sitting at home dealing with a quad core loaded at 70°C and thinking his chip is about to explode.

Talking of chips you have a nice one there, so what 24/7 clocks have you stelled at?

Just wondering whats the best cooler to put on my new Q6600/Abit IP35-Pro
:)
Back on topic . . .

I don't think there is such a thing as 'best' but some are better than others! :D
